Having Astle and McMillan getting handy wickets helped in that era too. When things were a struggle it meant the main bowlers wouldn't be over bowled too much (still got injured though).
Chris Harris of all people had a pretty decent series too. Don't think he did much in test cricket other than that.
England also had a revival of sorts after this series in reaction to th criticism for losing it. The good performances in subcontinent followed under Hussain when no one gave them a chance.

Here’s the test this game has most reminded me of so far. Gilchrist played the Bairstow role, how revolutionary was his batting then:

Makes for heartbreaking reading.

That over was Latham in a nutshell. Tight organised defence, a sumptuous cover drive for 4, and a baffling angled-bat dab at a wide one that could only ever end with a nick to slip.

Yeah and NZ ****ed up, in case you decided to miss my point. Bowling well is a bigger priority if you want to win Tests, and going in with only 3 proper bowlers is begging for a loss. A proper 4th bowler would 9/10 times have kept any side hobbling at 55-5 down.

Location is irrelevant unless you think winning games at Leeds with 4+ bowlers is impossible. It'll never make sense no matter where you go unless the side has given up on winning.
You didn’t have a point to miss. You misunderstood mine. However you have raised that location is irrelevant but we all know cricket is a game of conditions depending on location. NZ’s balance for this match is different to the ones previously selected. They haven’t explained why and it’s not unreasonable to speculate they’ve gambled on their 2 swing bowlers dominating at a ground that generally encourages it.

If that doesn't transpire, what about Conway opening, Mitchell up to 4 and Young back to 5?
I think they’ll stick with Young on the basis that it’s the subcontinent so they may get away with a non-regular opener there. Though Shaheen and co should have something to say about it.

No I got your point, but in the end it's a stupid decision since there is no real balance between runs and wickets that justifies this selection. Location is irrelevant in that there is no place in the world where it's justified to go in with 3 regular bowlers. Sides might be bowled out quickly by less bowlers but in general 3 is still too little to have if you want to win Tests. We don't need explanations from coaches to know that a dumb selection is dumb.

Very laboured looking over from Stokes, far cry from the first two tests.

Absolute paradise for batting at the moment, NZ a chance to see how well Baz ball holds up against 400 if they don’t do anything silly.

Lathams’s token 50+ score for the series. Played very well so far actually, now let’s see if he can deal with the stamina issues. These look comfortable batting conditions.
