ODI Mystery Draft

Flem274*

123/5
Sehwag can monster the spinners and both he and Gibbs make gun finishers.

I could have Gibbs open and bat Hayden at three. So many options with the batting order, and I have Heath Streak down at eight.

Last pick is Gary Kirsten.

That completes mine and Sam's team.

1. Marcuss Trescothick
2. Gary Kirsten
3. Ramnaresh Sarwan
4. Aravinda da Silva
5. Ross Taylor
6. Andrew Symonds
7. Brendon McCullum
8. Shakib Al Hasan
9. Shane Bond
10. Javagal Srinath
11. Saqlain Mushtaq

Strengths are the opening partnership, with one dasher and one accumulator, batting depth with very good finishers, excellent spin attack with plenty of options. Good opening bowlers.

Weaknesses probably the lack of seam options and power in the top order.

salman85

International Debutant
My final pick is Ricardo Powell.

Gilchrist
Astle
Ganguly
Kallis
Attapatu
Powell
Afridi
Gough
Morkel
Strang
Ntini

Plenty of big hitters in the team, along with the solid Kallis and Attapatu. Also, there are 5 specialist bowlers,6 if you include Kallis, and Ganguly and Astle are both handy options,so that's 6 regular, and 2 decent bowling options.Pretty well rounded ODI team, though the batting does appear to be thin when you consider that Powell is at number 5.

Angelo Mathews is my last pick

Sachin Tendulkar
Sanath Jayasuriya
AB de Villiers
Mahela Jayawardene
Ryan ten Doeschate
Angelo Mathews
Chris Harris
Stuart Broad
Umar Gul
Nathan Bracken
Kemar Roach

Yeah, no specialist spinner but awesome pace attack and a large array of very good part options - and Sachin and Sanath at times in their careers were definitely good enough to bowl 10 overs of spin regularly. Happy with the batting too, starting with The Best ODI Opening Combination Of All Time.

Somerset

Cricketer Of The Year
Tried my hand at a best of the rest team, with at least one player from the eight countries plus one classed as a minnow:
Graeme Smith
Romesh Kaluwitharana
Roger Twose
Michael Clarke
Younis Khan
Graeme Thorpe
Paul Collingwood
Brad Hogg
Harbhajan Singh
Vasbert Drakes
Anderson Cummins

Teams picked by country:

Minnows:

Tamim Iqbal
Andy Flower
Niall O'Brien
Tatenda Taibu
Ryan ten Doeschate
Grant Flower
Shakib Al Hasan
Kevin O'Brien
Paul Strang
Heath Streak

Actually pretty strong. Three keepers not doing much for team balance. Would swap Taibu for Olonga or Mortaza.

England:

Trescothick
Knight
Trott
Pietersen
Hick
Morgan
Stewart
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Gough

Not bad if you consider all the bowling options covered. Would take Collingwood over Hick myself.

Australia

Gilchrist
Hayden
Ponting
Symonds
Watson
Bevan
Warne
Lee
Gillepsie
Bracken
McGrath

So this is where the bowlers came from. Gillespie out, Mussey in.

Pakistan:

Saeed Anwar
Abdul Razzaq
Inzamam ul Haq
Mohammed Yousuf
Misbah ul Haq
Shoaib Malik
Shahid Afridi
Umar Gul
Shoaib Akhtar
Waqar Younis
Saqlain Mushtaq

Interesting. May as well solve the lack-of-openers problem and where-do-we-put-Razzaq problem with one move. Still a horror tail, would have Younis over Gul.

West Indies:

Gayle
Lara
Darren Bravo
Sarwan
Chanderpaul
Powell
Dwayne Bravo
Hinds
Taylor
Cuffy
Roach

South Africa

Kirsten
Gibbs
Kallis
de Villiers
Rice
Klusener
Pollock
Steyn
Morkel
Donald
Ntini

Killer bowling attack but there's at least 6 bowlers there, so swap Morne for Smith.

Sri Lanka

Jayasuria
Attapattu
Sangakkara
Jayawardene
Aravinda de Silva
Dilshan
Mathews
Vaas
Malinga
Muralitharan
Mendis

Pretty much spot on.

India

Tendulkar
Ganguly
Sehwag
Gambhir
Kholi
Yuvraj
Dravid
Dhoni
Kumble
Zaheer
Srinath

Ridiculously long batting, 3 bowlers. Realistic maybe, but you'd take Harbhajan over Kholi. And leave working out the batting order to someone else.

New Zealand

Astle
Fleming
Ryder
Taylor
McCullum
Cairns
Harris
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Bond

All 3 of Cairns, Harris and Oram perhaps not necessary, and you'd have another batsman, but overall pretty good.
