NZ contracted players for 09/10

straw man

Apparently will be announced within the next seven days. Dylan Cleaver made his picks in the NZ Herald, which I quoted below.

PREDICTED CONTRACT LIST

1. Daniel Vettori: New Zealand's captain also happens to be their best bowler and, too often, their best batsman. A shoo-in for No 1.

2. Brendon McCullum: One of the best keeper-batsmen in the world so once and for all let's abandon this nonsense of not playing him as a keeper.

3. Ross Taylor: Will play all three forms of the game and has a great pair of hands.

4. Jesse Ryder: If he stays level-headed, could well be the most valuable cricketer New Zealand has produced in a long time.

5. Jacob Oram: By default only. An injury-plagued Oram looks a shadow of his former self but deserves one more year to regain his touch with the bat.

6. Iain O'Brien: Will get a huge jump after a great last 12 months but are cracks starting to appear in his short-format game?

7. Martin Guptill: Will cap off a meteoric rise with a retainer close to six figures. Is one of the few batsmen adept at all three forms of the game.

8. James Franklin: Some work to do before convincing that he is an allrounder, let alone a test No 6.

9. Kyle Mills: Will likely take a drop after his test status came into question.

10. Chris Martin: Hard to believe the selectors actually thought there were better test new-ball bowlers out there.

11. Tim Southee: Probably fortunate to be this high and needs to start showing that the promise will materialise.

12. Jeetan Patel: the second-best spinner in the country should figure highly in Sri Lankan tour plans.

13. Shane Bond: If he's available he's in... right?

14. Daniel Flynn: Like fellow ND team-mate, has got to start turning the promise into something more tangible.

15. Grant Elliott: The glue in the one-day unit would like another opportunity at test level but it's unlikely to happen.

16. Ian Butler: Looked the pick of the seamers at the World T20.

17. Aaron Redmond: Has gone from unlikely to likely in the space of a few Irish overs. Is a realistic option in all three forms.

18. Tim McIntosh: struggled badly against India but has to be given the tour to Sri Lanka at least.

19. Nathan McCullum: Will most likely get an opportunity in ODIs as well as T20 this year.

20. Neil Broom: The jury is still well and truly out but his role in one of the most difficult in short-form cricket.

NOTABLES

* Scott Styris: the sun might have set.

* Jamie How: needs a year at first-class level to regain touch.

* Kane Williamson: a year too early for contract.

* Peter Fulton: has not done enough.

* Gareth Hopkins: Could sneak in if Bond not picked.
Surprisingly agree with most of the names on the list and the notable exclusions, though there is plenty of room for debate on the order of the list. One complete omission is Daryl Tuffey, who on last seasons form could easily be on there. But who knows how they'll treat the ex-ICLs - may make him prove himself again next domestic season instead.

Also names 8/9 down are pretty much all single-form specialists. ie test or limited over. Found that surprising.

Edit: Also just realised Peter McGlashan is not on there - think he could easily fit in low down the list somewhere, probably in place of Aaron Redmond or Tim McIntosh. Definitely ahead of Hopkins in all formats IMO.

I agree with most of that list, except I doubt McIntosh will ever amount to anything, along with Redmond so its a bit meh. Tuffey should be in there, I'd pick him ahead of Southee for a start. Hopkins is a good keeper, would rather him keep in tests than McGlashan. McGlashan would get the nod in limited overs though.

I have no real problems with the list. I don't see McIntosh or Redmond as long term prospects but they probably deserve contracts, especially McIntosh.

Agree that Williamson needs one more season, but man, if that kid lives up to half the hype he's going to be big.

No room for Tuffey...he's an unknown quantity at the moment. I'm sure he's happy just being back in the fold and playing for Auckland.

Can't see McGlashan amounting to much. His batting isn't good enough for test cricket and if McCullum is keeping in all forms (which he should be, what a ridiculous decision to have him in the field for the T20 WC) I see better batsmen who can bat down the order in the shorter versions.

How highly (or lowly?) rated is Dylan Cleaver among NZ cricket writers? He seems like a man who knows what he is talking about.

Southee should be a lot lower, also Kane deserves it more then McIntosh because let's face it. He has one more series with the Blackcaps

And with Oram's form the way it is does he really deserve to be that high?

He's probably the best one the Herald have (Boock has gone completely hasn't he?). I'd rather read him than Rattue.

Think we should get Trent Boult in there tbh.

Pretty good list.

Is it actually listed in order of first to last picked, or valuable, or salary, or just like that with numbers for no reason at all?

It's first to last picked, and salary is also based on that. I'm pretty sure they do a top player ranking for tests and ODIs, and then combine the two to make a list like this. Not sure if 20/20 is now included or not.

New Zealand contracted players Brent Arnel, Shane Bond, Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, James Franklin, Daniel Flynn, Martin Guptill, Gareth Hopkins, Brendon McCullum, Tim McIntosh, Chris Martin, Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Daniel Vettori.

Bondy's back and a surprise contract for Brent Arnel. Hopkins also holds onto his contract, which is a strange one for me.

Bye bye How, Fulton, Styris, Redmond, Gillespie, Marshall and Mason.

I'm happy with everyone on that list bar McIntosh, who was a complete waste of a contract unless he pulls his usual "once a season" century out for SL, in which case we'll be stuck with him for even longer.

To be fair the selectors pretty much had to give him a contract. He does deserve another series.

While I agree he will almost certainly fail, you can't drop someone on what may happen in the future...and hey, he's not going to do any worse than Redmond, Bell, Cumming or Papps anyway.

Trouble with McIntosh is that no one else has really put their hand up for that spot. I wondered if Redmond may have got it with his decent innings at the 20:20, but he couldn't follow it up.

Wouldn't have Arnel, Hopkins or McIntosh personally. Good to see the back of Marshall. Thought Tuffey should be in there ahead of Arnel; though going by this I suspect Tuffey may find it harder to get back in than Bond will.

Forgot Tuffey, yeah I'd have him ahead of Arnel. Arnel isn't a bad pick though, generally a good bowler for ND. Hopkins is the second best keeper in the country, though I don't really mind either way if he gets a contract or not.

tbh I think Redmond and How, whilst obviously not very good, have more hope than McIntosh.

I don't see styris being recontracted by IPl after this year,so he will have to do some big thinking over his career, may have to become a marquee player like andrew symmonds.

I agree How has more hope than McIntosh, but his dreadful form over a long period of time pretty much doomed him to be left in the wilderness, and fair enough too. I'm still optimistic he'll get back to his best though. He's only just turned 28, so not ancient by any means.

Not so sure about Tuffey. I think Arnel's a decent inclusion, if not for injury last season he would have played cricket for New Zealand also. A good start to the domestic season by Tuffey and poor form from one or two of the contracted players could easily see Tuffey in the team though.

Thought Styris got a rough deal, thought he was pretty good in the T20 WC and should have been playing more. People have been talking up Tuffey a lot so that's pretty suprising, lol @ Tim Mcintosh, would have given it to Jamie How instead.

Should have been playing more? From memory he played every single game for us at the T20 WC and made one decent score (a 40 odd...forget who it was against). He, like Oram, and all the other senior players, was rubbish.
