New Zealand's squad for ICC Champions trophy

S.P. Fleming

U19 Cricketer
He got 4 wickets against the Warriors and only bowled 2 overs vs India.
I know he's been around the 5 RPO mark since his comeback, but he often takes crucial wickets.
yes, very true. Since his comeback he has developed a handy knack of taking wickets when things go against us.Bond and Mills have to be automatics in this side ATM. Their is one spot up for grabs, between Tuffey and Butler - im just leaning towards the tuffster.

International Captain
Agreed. If we pick Butler because of his batting at no.10 then what does that say about the rest of the batsmen?

The wickets Butler took were right at the end of the innings and came close to bringing us back the match, but they were mostly the tail IIRC. Mills bowled wonderfully tight in that match and Tuffey took 3 top order wickets. I hope that by not bowlng Mills in the second warm up it was because he had selected his place in the team by going so cheaply.

Mills. Tuffey, Bond just seem to be a level above Butler for me.

09 Records

Butler - 34 overs 5 wickets Economy 5.79 Average 39.4
Tuffey - 9 overs 1 wicket Economy 3.88 Average 35
Mills - 114.3 overs 20 wickets Economy 5.08 Average 29.10

Both Butler and Tuffey haven't played much but its interesting to note that Tuffey's one outing came at cheaper than any of Butlers.
Actually a brief view of all this years ODI records would be interesting

Bond - 20 overs 3 wickets Economy 3.65 Average 24.33
Vettori - 109 overs 12 wickets Economy 4.17 Average 37.58
Oram - 47.3 overs 4 wickets Economy 4.56 Average 54.25
Patel - 33.4 overs 3 wickets Economy 5.76 Average 64.66

McCullum - 367 @ 24.46 SR 74.59
2 50s
Ryder - 292 @ 32.44 SR 97
1 100 1 50
Guptill - 473 @ 47.30 SR 83.12
1 100 3 50s
Taylor - 466 @ 38.83 SR 81.75
4 50s
Elliott - 381 @ 47.62 SR 79.20
1 100 1 50
Oram 61 @ 10.16 SR 71.76
...
Broom 128 @ 18.28 SR 74.41
...
Mills 118 @ 14.75 SR 86.76
1 50
Vettori 76 @ 19 SR 86.36
...
Butler 55 @ 13.75 SR 61.79

lol at Mills Vettori (and Butler comes close) having far far better years than Oram with the bat.

Also if we count Broom's knock in the warm up (and since it was against a near full strength Indian team we may as well) his average goes up to 24.25. Not ideal but hardly as poor as Oram's 61 runs (if we add his warm up score of 7 he gets to 68 and his average goes down).

Loving 3-5 and have faith in 1-2 and Broom.

There'd have to be quite a few injuries before we picked Diamanti though thank god.
This was the second post of the thread. Apparently the answer is "more than three". (or more than 4 if you count Butler)

It's funny, the exact problems with the squad that have arisen were exactly what everyone here was moaning about a month ago.

Lol @ you even suggesting we count Broom's score from a meaningless warm-up game. He's still yet to get to 30 in 12 digs and many on this site continue to talk him as some golden find for NZ cricket.

Also, the 09 stats (particularly the bowling stats) provide little or no context overall as you've had different players playing against different sides in different conditions. e.g Mills (114 overs) compared to Tuffey (9 overs). Also those bowlers who played against India in NZ when Sehwag & Tendulkar were eating us for breakfast obviously will have a far worse RPO for a start.

Didn't criticize any players for having high RPOs overall nor did I imply that any of the stats were particularly meaningful. Just had an overview of how they all went. Nor did I say anything about how Tuffey was great!!!!!! Everyone can see he only played a little.

And I want to believe in Broom! I really do. Firmly caught between two worlds in that department. And we may as well count the warm up as a List A match-esque situation.

Rubbish, you can't count warm-ups as anything other than what they are & shouldn't even contemplate including them as anything indicative of his ODI form/performances

Reckon they do indicate form but you are quite right in saying they shouldn't be counted as ODIs. Nor are they a form indicator to a great extent I suppose, a failure is hardly condemning but a success is probably a good indication.
