In the early twentieth century, due to the laws imposed by the British empire, the Parsi community had to find Western style surnames for themselves.

They just invented stuff:
Based on profession: Merchant, Engineer, Contractor, Doctor etc.
Based on trade: Canvaswala, Daruwala, Rumwala etc. as well as the magnificent [FONT=q_serif] [/FONT]Sodabottleopenerwala[FONT=q_serif, Georgia, Times, Times New Roman, Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro, Meiryo, serif].[/FONT]
Based on place of origin: Taraporewala, Suratwala etc.
