Mediations Break Down In West Indies

This is the funniest thing ever. Apparently two journalists have been on public radio giving misleading info in direct contrast to what the mediator has said on public record. Basically it seems the WICB made unreasonable demands and negotiations broke down as a result. This is also the first time the mediator has failed in an endeavour and he's at a loss as to how the WICB can negotiate in such bad faith.

So it seems the tour to Australia may be missing the likes of Gayle and Chanderpaul if this thing gets worse.

Oh, great. Thats all we need. An even weaker West Indies team. At least Cricket Australia would get decent crowds and TV ratings for the ODI's and Twenty20 matces involving the West Indies since they are a lot more competitve in those formats than test. More people would go to see a Paris Hilton movie than to see an even weaker West Indian side play test matches.

I suppose England winning the Ashes isnt a bad thing from a financial point of view. Like in 2006/07 it will just mean more interest in 2010/11

Lets hope things are sorted out.

DEAD END

The above is the WICB Vice President's statements and also those of the mediator blaming the board.

And this from someone who once worked for the WICB but gladly retained sanity:

The mediation broke down because the WICB asked for (among other things) arbitration to determine:

1.)Who is WIPA....Sir Sridath tore them a new asshole and asked them how the rass they could be asking about the identity of an organization that they have been dealing with for the past 35 years???!!

2.) A lawsuit against WIPA for $3 million in lost sponsorship money.

3.) A lawsuit against WIPA for $150,000 for lost TV revenue from the Bangladesh series.

Ramphal was truly pissed at the WICB.

And ah hear that Cameron and Hunte not speaking....Hunte say Cameron had no authority during the negotiations and Cameron is highly pissed.

So it seems this'll be all about the WICB having their way. The senior players have to participate in the upcoming List A tournament to be available to be picked to tour Australia but there's been no clarification as to whether they actually have to play or just be available. That's considering a player might not be a first choice for his team in List A and so he'd be playing ahead of someone else better at that format like say Nash may not be first choice in terms of OD cricket but to get him back in the Test team he has to play that form.

Could see careers ended if they continue with this hardline appraoch which seems to be about destroying the players union or making it impotent thus giving them free reign.

And they've also ignored an ICC request per se to pick the best available team for the Champions Trophy or else they (WICB) will have to foot the bill for any losses to the ICC.

What's more is that during mediation they neglected to point out that they wouldn't be selecting the players even if they made themselves available so it was all for nought really.

This is getting ridiculous now. Both sides are losing out badly, the WICB are too stubborn to give in to some of the players demands, and the players want money which is not going to be present because sponsors can't be brought in with the situation as it is, and no other country in its right mind is going to invite WI to come for an extra tour to make some money.

It's been ridiculous for weeks now once the WICB decided to not select the best team for the CT. So this goes to another arbitration which stands at 7-0 to the players over basically the same issues which is also related to this current impasse. One of the key ingredients being the board sold the image rights of the players to the main sponsor for the duration of the contract without contacting WIPA while it turns out that WIPA formed a company which the players sold their rights to. Hence, the WICB sold the rights that they don't own which is a part of the contract they want the players to sign, forcing them to allow the WICB free reign. Also similar to how they sold Stanford rights that the main sponsor Digicel had which resulted in that court case that meant Stanford had been sold rights he couldn't have owned which he didn't know due to WICB being incompetent and had to use the Digicel stuff.

What's the most sensible outcome now, I'm not really up on the whole background? Presumably the WICB have to be cleared out of the majority of the management, to get rid of the people who've made these past mistakes. But there's usually got to be some give from the other side in these kind of disputes, what is it that the players will have to give?

Very little TBH. Might just have to lessen the amount of money they're demanding. The problem is AFAIK what they're demanding is in line with the rest of the cricket world. Yet to see anything that makes the player position wholly unreasonablle. The only thing that'd be possibly wrong is they might be asking for more than the WICB can pay and benefits that can't be provided. But when the WICB wastes more than US$19 million of funds over the last couple years it's not hard to see why they can't afford it.

Oh and the WICB doesn't want to deal with the image rights holding company since it's a WIPA subsidiary and has the same directors. Thus it could be a conflict of interest. WIPA is non-profit but the company WIPMACOl is for profit.

There's more in that first article I linked to but I've seen blatant lies by the WICB before so I need proof before believing them.

Why can't the ICC just step in and tell the WICB to pick the best squad possible for the CT or they are not invited to the CT?

This is really getting out of hand now, would be terrible if we had to send a second string team to the tour of Australia. Hope the ICC can step in and sort something out.

Pretty appalling. If the ICC eventually dropped Zimbabwe for mismanagement, and the US setup for the same issues, surely there will come a point where they can do the same to the WICB.

That would require balls.
Interestingly, the IAAF had the balls to step in and insist that the JAAA bury the hatchet in their silly, trivial argument with Stephen Francis, and allow Asafa Powell, Brigitte Foster and Shelly-Ann Fraser to compete at the World Champs. The ICC could learn from taht precedent....
But the WICB, led by madman Hunte, seem to think they have carte blanche to do their foolishness, because no administrator in the Caribbean had the guts to challenge them at the AGM last month. The end result is that Hunte and Co were re-elected unopposed!

Has there ever been a comprehensive strategy by the WICB to professionalize, market and run the game as adults?

Not sure that the ICC can ever tell a member country who to pick, though. And in any case several of the 'new' side, such as Roach, Bernard and Sammy, would claim that they should be in the team anyway.
