Matthew Elliot Retires

howardj

International Coach
MTG has retired.

Like Blewett, he looked so very promising around 1997...And then along came Courtney Walsh in the Windies circa 1999.

Apparently he was very sulky on that 1999 tour, a fact that the new captain didn't appreciate. He never played again for Australia until Tugga retired.

Prolific domestic run-scorer, a shame he never really kicked on with his Test career. Always thought it was odd he never played many ODIs, with such a fantastic List A record.

My favourite innings of his was the 199 against England where he shared a big partnership with Ponting.

I was never a fan of his though. SACA Cricket has certainly changed in the past 4 months they've lost Elliott, Blewett, Lehmann and Tait.

Under-achiever in international cricket - lots of talent and pretty good technique

Best chin ever for a cricketer.

I was a fan of Elliott.

Remember the season he, Brad Hodge and Dave Hussey all had in 2003/04. Victoria's batting was indestructable.

My lasting Matthew Elliot memory....after the NZ v FICA World XI match in Hamilton in early 2005, I was out on the town in Hamilton (I think the place is called "The Outback"?) with pretty much all the players from both sides....Elliot was smashed, and pretty much became best friends with one of my mates, was buying us drinks etc, and then started dancing on top of a table, lol

Elliott got a bad wrap as a bloke due to him not getting on well with Steve Waugh. Really good fella.

Bingo.

I loved his technique. He seemed to be a better player than Langer but I guess it's hard to succeed in Australia when you have to compete with so many good players.

I'm hating this latest spate of retirements. blewitt, kaspa and elliot were 3 of my favourites. I'm of the definite opinion that steve waugh was a knob.

His 4 day form the last 4 years has been crap, his one day form the last 2 years has been scintillating.
Been a good servant to cricket, could have been greater in the test arena.

One of the best and most fluent batsmen I have ever seen play the game. Bravo, Matthew.

I will never forgive him for scoring a century for Yorksh*te against Somerset in the C&G trophy final in 2002. Grrrr.

Will always revel in that TBH. One of the best innings I've ever seen in English domestic cricket.
