Even so, I don't think that's a terribly bad thing. He's hardly cutting his career off in its prime to go to the ICL is he?

Wasted talent. Saw him play in the flesh only once.....an ODI at Lords on the 97 Tour........I'm fairly sure he was out in the first over but that day was all about Ben Holioake making his debut.

In top form, Matthew Elliot was undeniably a classy batsman with an eye-catching hook shot and excellent footwork. The boy clearly had talent - indeed, Damien Fleming (not the best judge, but I'm just saying) thought that he was gonna eventually rank with Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara as a truly world-class batsman. His 199 at Headingley, made when Australia were in dire straits and with the series arguably on the line, was undeniably brilliant (although not quite chanceless). Too bad his temperamental flaws got in the way. Blowing his comebacks (plus getting injured in 1996) didn't help - one in 1999, one in 2004. Sadly, I only got to see him play live in the 2004 game against Sri Lanka, where he made 1 and 0 on a hellish track. Still, despite his status as a perennial Australian 'what-if', I wish the boy luck in his future endeavours.
