Victoria overcome Yorkshire with ease
A faltering Yorkshire side struggled to mount resistance against a rampaging Victorian team.
Victoria's innings begun quickly, until Bhandari removed Harvey as he was on 9, the score 1/36. From here, the lack of bowling depth in the Yorkshire side revealed it's ugly head as the Victorian batting asserted it's dominance. Beasley sped to 79 from 91, assisted by Schiller (37 from 40) in a quickfire 62 run partnership, until Nazir struck, dismissing Schiller, who was just 13 runs short from his half century, the score 2/98. Any hope the Yorkshire side have of restricting Victoria to a reasonable total was blown out of the water by Kaif (89*) and Hussey (43*), the two enjoying a destructive, unbeaten 113-run partnership for the 5th wicket, Victoria finishing on 4/287. The best of the bowlers were Hamilton (2/44) and Bhandari (1/43).
Chasing a target of 288, with a required runrate of 5.76, the Yorkshire boys came out, all guns blazing. The openers, Tendulkar and Weir, laboured on in the early overs, until a nippy delivery from Harwood sent Weir (9) back to the Pavillion. A quick 56-run second wicket partnership between Tendulkar (32) and Boxall (58) hurried the score to 2/76. De Silva (30) paired up with Boxall, the two accumulating 40 runs in their quick partnership together. Some heroic pinch-hitting from Hemp (26 from 20) was not enough to save the weak lower order, Harvey enjoyed a field day, taking 3 of the last 4 wickets, the Yorkshire lineup eventually falling short by 88 runs, all out for 199. Harvey finished with 3/29, Harwood with 3/28 and Wettasinghe with 2/45. Boxall was the standout batsmen with a solid, nearly a-run-a-ball 58.
The Yorkshire manager claimed that the team "failed to support eachother adequately" and was "showing cracks early in the season." Having only just taken over as manager this season, Robertinho also defended his team, offering the excuse that the team was still gelling and the opposition were just too strong. "I expect the boys to bounce back strong next round. At the end of the day, the people who are most upset by a loss is the players, and I have no doubt they will be working as hard as ever to win their next fixture."
Asked about the introduction of finances into WCC, Robertinho was vague on the touchy subject, "I think it's an interesting innovation and full credit to those who came up with the idea, and persevered to implement it. Time will tell whether it adds to the game, though it will certainly add a new dimension." He went on to add, "How does it affect Yorkshire? Well, I can't disclose that information, however I can say we will be looking very closely at where it puts us at the moment."
