South Australia Lose

unfortunately my gut feelings turned into a nightmare as SA were unable to chase 140 odd to win the match against Warwicks. The bowling stood up again with spinners Axelby and Bandara amongstthe wickets. With the bat Van Jaasrveld played well again, but got no support apart from a quick fire 20 odd from Midlane, disapointing to be bundled out for such a low score, we will be aiming to hit back in the four day game next week...

Not much to say except the Auckland bowlers continue to disappoint in the OD version of the game. It's last season again... except we were still able to beat Div 3 competition.

Week of controversy ends on happy note for under-fire Somerset manager

Somerset coach and manager Mr. P has capped off a very interesting week of cricket with a thumping win over Glamorgan, news that will be refreshing for him after having earlier been on the brink of the sack by WCC management.

Mr. P was all over the papers today, having made some very controversial and offensive statements that took key WCC player Broncoman within inches of, in his own words, "showing him the door." The comments made by P were in relation to the newly released Finance system, which has been immensly popular in it's first few days. P was one of only a few to speak out against the system.

So it must have come as a relief today when his team, Somerset, wrapped up a below par Glamorgan side within 36 overs. Having won the toss, Glamorgan made the strange decision to bat first, and it was at this point that the depression crept in for their fans. Star Somerset spinner Dhamika was at his brilliant best, taking 6-9 from 4 overs, including 2 maidens. Glamorgan were tumbled out for 85 from a mere 20 overs, as all Somerset bowlers did well.

The target was never going to be a problem for Somerset, who, despite losing both Beasley and Donald early, never looked in trouble. Elahi (35*) and Godwin (41*) both batted well, as the total was stuck down in 16 overs. For Glamorgan, the only positive to take out of the game was the form of Jeffrey, who made nearly half their runs and was not dismissed.

At the post-match interview, Mr. P was visibly happy. "It's good to continue our unbeaten run. I've come under a bit of criticism over the past couple of days for some stupid comments I made, and it's good to dominate a match like that, very pleasing, brings a smile to the face. I think I might like to issue an apology to the WCC board, I was wrong to unfairly judge them like that."

Asked about the form of Dhamika, there was obvious display of affection for the young man, who has to taken to bowling for Somerset like a cat to stew. "Yeah, he's been great, hasn't he? Today I thought he was brilliant. Dhamika is a bit of a work horse, always performing, week in, week out. It's good to have someone like that in your side."

Victoria overcome Yorkshire with ease

A faltering Yorkshire side struggled to mount resistance against a rampaging Victorian team.

Victoria's innings begun quickly, until Bhandari removed Harvey as he was on 9, the score 1/36. From here, the lack of bowling depth in the Yorkshire side revealed it's ugly head as the Victorian batting asserted it's dominance. Beasley sped to 79 from 91, assisted by Schiller (37 from 40) in a quickfire 62 run partnership, until Nazir struck, dismissing Schiller, who was just 13 runs short from his half century, the score 2/98. Any hope the Yorkshire side have of restricting Victoria to a reasonable total was blown out of the water by Kaif (89*) and Hussey (43*), the two enjoying a destructive, unbeaten 113-run partnership for the 5th wicket, Victoria finishing on 4/287. The best of the bowlers were Hamilton (2/44) and Bhandari (1/43).

Chasing a target of 288, with a required runrate of 5.76, the Yorkshire boys came out, all guns blazing. The openers, Tendulkar and Weir, laboured on in the early overs, until a nippy delivery from Harwood sent Weir (9) back to the Pavillion. A quick 56-run second wicket partnership between Tendulkar (32) and Boxall (58) hurried the score to 2/76. De Silva (30) paired up with Boxall, the two accumulating 40 runs in their quick partnership together. Some heroic pinch-hitting from Hemp (26 from 20) was not enough to save the weak lower order, Harvey enjoyed a field day, taking 3 of the last 4 wickets, the Yorkshire lineup eventually falling short by 88 runs, all out for 199. Harvey finished with 3/29, Harwood with 3/28 and Wettasinghe with 2/45. Boxall was the standout batsmen with a solid, nearly a-run-a-ball 58.

The Yorkshire manager claimed that the team "failed to support eachother adequately" and was "showing cracks early in the season." Having only just taken over as manager this season, Robertinho also defended his team, offering the excuse that the team was still gelling and the opposition were just too strong. "I expect the boys to bounce back strong next round. At the end of the day, the people who are most upset by a loss is the players, and I have no doubt they will be working as hard as ever to win their next fixture."

Asked about the introduction of finances into WCC, Robertinho was vague on the touchy subject, "I think it's an interesting innovation and full credit to those who came up with the idea, and persevered to implement it. Time will tell whether it adds to the game, though it will certainly add a new dimension." He went on to add, "How does it affect Yorkshire? Well, I can't disclose that information, however I can say we will be looking very closely at where it puts us at the moment."

Victoria 4/287 (50.0 overs)
Kaif 89* (99), Beasley 79 (91), Hussey 43* (43)
Hamilton 2/44, Bhandari 1/43

Yorkshire 199a.o. (50.0 overs)
Boxall 58 (63), Tendulkar 32 (55)
Harwood 3/28, Harvey 3/29

Victoria win by 88 runs

Surprised new Glamorgan manager didn't use Y Cole. He was good for them in the first round and last season for Guyana.

Mashonland lose first match under new guidance

Mashonland, under the guidance of their new manager Andyc for the first time, lost to a batting-strong Karachi line up by 30 runs.

Karachi batted first, and things were initially looking up for Mashonland, with Ramanayake striking first blood with the score just on 23, capturing opener M Manhus lbw for 3. Things went down hill for the bowlers from there, with the next four batsmen all notching up half-centuries. Opener Ghulam Ahmed top-scored with a very-well played 73 off 80 balls, and was well supported by first drop Dhoni (56 off 60). These two were dismissed within 30 runs of each other, giving the bowlers a small glimmer of hope, until J Cooke and B Khan, (60* and 72* respectively), attacked the bowlers. Allrounder G Burns was especially favoured, his 9 overs going for 65. Karachi finished off their 50 overs on 279 for 3, a competitive score on a nice batting strip. Pick of the bowlers were K Sami, with 10/1/36/0 and C Ramanayake with figures of 10/1/52/2.

The high score was never gonig to be easy to chase, especially with the two openers, R Arnold (12) and A Petal (31), being dismissed with the score only on 69. Thankfully for Mashonland, batsmen Ul-Haq and Carver turned the game in Mashonland's direction, Ul-Haq stroking a quick-fire 49 off 52 balls before being well caught in the slips by Cooke off Louw's bowling, an agonising one run short of his 50. Carver carried on, but struggled to find partners, as the next two batsmen were both polished off for four, and it was up to all-rounder G Burns to redeem himself after his bowling and support Carver.

Unfortunately, some tight bowling from Elstub (10/2/34/1) and Mishra (10/5/29/1) meant that the Mashonland batsman couldn't quite get the runs needed. By the time Carver was run-out for a fine knock of 80 off 96 with the score on 220, the game was well and truly over, and the only thing that seemed to keep Burns batting was a desire to make a half-century. Unfortunately he was stranded on 45 not out at the end of the 50 overs, despite giving Karachi top-scorer Ghulam Ahmed (10/0/77/0) some grief. Mashonland finished 249/6, 30 runs short of their target.

When asked about the game in the post-match press conference, Mashonland manager AndyC said, "We definitely improved from our last match, but we were simply outplayed by Karachi's strong batting and economical bowling, and I'm proud of the players for giving it their all."

Guyana Continue Impressive Form

Guyana were able to fight back from a tough first round loss against Karachi to win comfortable over Tasmania in the second round. Jenkins was again impressive has he notched 60 runs bringing his season tally in both forms to 405 runs. Guyana were set back early when they lost de Villiers for 2, but Jenkins and Francis (36) steadied the ship and brought the score to 2-58. Jenkins then combined with Beasley (34) for a 72 run stand. Jenkins was dissmised and Vernon fell soon after for a quick-fire 19. Ardley (79*) and keeper McDonald (40*) kept the runs flowing in the final overs for an 88 run stand and Guyana finished their 50 overs 5-278.

Tasmania were off to a poor start when Perrera (2-23) dismissed Rowell in the first over for no score. Three quick wickets soon fell as Guyana reduced Tasmania to 4-33. Tasmania were never able to recover, but two steady partnerships saw Tasmania reach 6-165. However it was too much as Zulch (5-42) again produced his young spinning magic to break the important partnerships and wrap up the tail. Tasmania were all out for 168 in the 37th over.

Guana 5-278 (50)
Z Ardley 79* (64)
J Jenkins 60 (79)
Z McDonald 40* (24)

N Charlton 61 (83)
T Canning 36 (49)

Tamil Nadu lost again... oh yeh
If we lose every OD game and win the 4D title I'll be happy.

TN bowled extremely poorly after posting a great score of 291 thanks to a top notch century from D Cowe. Clissit, a half century scorer in the TN innings, was thrown the ball far too often from skipper Cardew and TN lsot on the back of poor bowling by him, Martin and Nawab.

Karnataka Make It Three From Three
Kent Tied Down To Win

An all-round professional effort from Karnataka saw them beat chaminda00's Kent by three wickets with more than eleven overs to spare at Canterbury. Kent never really got going, with Khalid Ali in particular tying them down - bowling five maidens and ending with one wicket for 30. French in particular struggled with Ali's bowling, as he built a partnership of 61 with Stratton off over 15 overs. However, all the bowlers contributed, even part-time spinner Vijay Wadekar who took two wickets for 44 runs. With only one wide being bowled, Karnataka were faced with a target of 225 to win.

Despite losing Howarth early to a silly run-out, Abhijit Kale and Sanjay Borde quickly upped the scoring-rate, hitting boundaries at will and taking Karnataka to 76 for 1 after about ten overs. Though Borde and Maxwell were quickly lost, and Kent's bowlers chipped away quietly, the batsmen knew how to punish them. Batting down to eight with Howard Wilkins turned out to be a stroke of genius, as Wilkins scored 17 not out to see them to the target after Kent had Karnataka on the rack at 198 for 7.

I am gutted! Rolled in 20 overs with six ducks!!! I will be sending all of the squad (apart from Jeffrey and Gill) to the shrink and maybe take them on a field trip to the factory. That should teach them to throw their wickets away aimlessly.

Ali Lives Up To Hype

When the Lahore squad was established during the off season 26 year old Pakistani batsman Ali was the most sort after talent on the Lahore squad, and just 3 weeks into the season it seams Hoy's reluctance to trade him before the season looks a great decision for the future of the fledgling outfit. Playing their first ever WCC home game, Lahore was keen to continue their good OD form with a second up victory against the also undefeated Chittagong. Some good, tight bowling led by all-rounder Amjad (4/42) restricted the visitors to 265/9 off their 50 overs. In Lahore first home inning the fans that turned out to see the game were treated to a showcase of Ali's talents and promise with the bat during an unbeaten 138 from 147 balls to see Lahore through to victory in the second last over of the innings. First game (OD) man of the match Amjad backed up his good performance with the ball to record an impressive 68 from 58 balls with the bat, as part of the decisive 131 run unbeaten forth wicket partnership.

The win takes Lahore to the top of the OD standings, but the team will be much more intent on turning around a first up loss in the FC arena. Tickets for the FC fixture go on sale today with still in the area of 62,800 tickets available for the game against Chittagong :p.

Chittagong - 265/9
Madurasinghe 93(98), Payne 56(89).
Amjad 4/42, Butt 3/58.

Lahore - 266/3
Ali 138 (147), Amjad 68 (58).
Sharma 1/35, Hasan 1/30.

Free State vs ACT @ Manuka

Free State were written off during the week in a match preview by Simon Fitzsimmons, and the preview proved to be correct. It mentioned that Free State would not have the batting strength to match ACT, saying alot relied upon 'keeper Y Snow and Z Court. But with Court injured Free State's batting was very depleted and was shown in the scorecard.

Free State went in to bat first and while the openers got off to a semi decent start, putting 47 on the board, the middle order failed and from 1/47 the scoreboard was reading 6/82. The only positive to come from it was I Javed falling 3 short of his half century and getting a respectable 47 from 57, but alas it was not enough, with Free State being bowled out for a dismal 151 from a pathetic 45 overs.

This was never going to be a hard task for the intimidating ACT batting lineup, with them getting to the target in 35 overs with only 3 wickets lost. The pick of the ACT batsmen was opener M Dawn with a stroked 66* from 102 balls. A positive coming from the bowling display was Chris Tremlett getting a couple of wickets and finishing with 2/42 from 7 overs, hopefully his form will continue and he'll snare a few wickets this season.

Free State 155 a.o (45 overs) - I Javed 47(57), Y Snow 35(86), A Tweedie 3/15(7), H McPhee 3/44(10)
ACT 3/155 (35 overs) - M Dawn 66*(102), A Tweedie 41(53), C Tremlett 2/42(7)

ACT win by 7 wickets.
