Cricketer Of The Year
The KW one is a strech too. Not that I think he is not good enough, but sadly he'll never play enough tests to do it.

Kohli to retire by 35, between 10,500 - 11,000 test runs. Average between 55-57

Williamson - Retires at about 38. 11,500 - 12,000. Between 50 and 52

Smith - retires at 37 but to average just less than 50 in the second half of his career. 13,000 - 13,500 between 56 and 58.

Root - To retire at 36, having played more test cricket than Williamson in this period. To finish with the most runs but the marginally worst average. 14,000 - 14,500 runs averaging between 49-51

I have a strong premonition that Smith will be a shadow of his old-self upon return. Rightfully or wrongfully, Kohli will be the batsman of this generation.

I think it's pretty unlikely Williamson finishes with an average of 51-52 at this point. He is only just entering his prime years and currently averages 51.56. He's been averaging 60 odd for his last 50 Tests and doesn't seem likely to stop anytime soon.

Reckon he will end up averaging around 54/55

Mid career slump plus end career slump have claimed many averages

Thing is, its too rare for a player to have a 10+ years career and not have a slump at some point; usually at the end. His average being roughly the same takes into account a continuing rise of average, but then a bit of a slump at one point. But maybe since NZ play less test cricket than the other 3 nations he might be able to have more consistency, and whenever he hits bad form it might not be so exploited

On the other hand, I'm not sure Kohli will last long enough for age to make his average any worse. I'm of the opinion that he'll tire himself out playing all three formats and captaining them all. Known shoulder injury and is himself aware that he'll probably have a shorter career than others. Might benefit his legacy though if he retires at near enough his best

I just spent an hour replying to this with stats of the best bats in history comparing their final average with their average at 28. And then my Chrome died and swallowed it.

It was these players and this is how much their averages went up or down

The bigger number was that these guys ended up averaging 251130 runs @ 53.97 (5228 innings, 575 NO) and at 28 averaged 88484 @ 53.24 (1873 innings, 211 NO). So as a rule they tend to improve slightly rather than regress from this stage of their respective careers. The big exceptions appear to be Tendulkar and Viv.

Damn fine work

I wonder if the trend would change if we used 30 instead of 28 as the mid-career stat. I feel like at 28 most players have probably not reached their best. (I know that's not really relevant and why 28 was chosen, just putting it out there)

Yeah I haven't checked the numbers but I feel like at age 30 that .73 gap would've closed by a solid margin.
