Wicket keeping is obviously more important than slips fielding; I just don't really consider it a "fielding position" as such; it's keeping. Not my point anyway.

i had only one grouse against him, statistically, and that black mark is gone now.

of course,i find him boring to watch. but that cant change the fact that he is among the top 10 cricketers of all time to have played this game - on par with WG, sobey, beefy, immy, nuggets, kapsy etc.

I have to admit a few years ago he was rather boring to watch but no more than say someone like Dravid and we ignored that because he was such a legend even then. Though in the past couple of years specifically he has actually kicked his SR up to something like 52 thanks in part to the IPL (at least it did something right) and is a pleasure to watch. He will never be a McCullum or Gayle but he is still improving which is pretty amazing for a guy who has done almost everything that can be achieved on the cricket field.

So good to see more people appreciate just how legendary a cricketer Pollock was. Thought I was alone in rating him so highly .

Yeah, It defies logic to consider say, Tendulkar a better test cricketer than Kallis or Marshall a better test cricketer than Pollock as the difference between their main skills is negligible from a practicality POV and their Superiority in their secondary skill makes them considerably better test cricketers.

Since you rate All rounders higher than specialists then it would be interesting to know how wicketkeepers are rated then?

Wicket keeping is the most important position and going by the logic of all round attributes wicketkeeper batsmen ought to be rated among the best Cricketers too.

I tend to count keeper-batsmen as all rounders. Remember, a wicket-keeper, unlike a slip fielder, could not be doing another job at the same time to help his side. I for example would rate Gilchrist among the world's best all-rounders.

It's a very personal point. Speaking as a slightly rubbish bowler, a fairly terrible batsman and an untterly diabolical wicketkeeper, I think they need a bit more credit than they generally get.

somehow people all around the world had been waiting for him to score a double hundred i feel. at least i was vocal about it, and CW members still like to kick me for it whenever there is a chance. others are slowly coming out of the closet.

the point is.... i feel now that there is nothing that can stop anyone from calling kallis one of the greatest cricketers of all time. he has ticked all the boxes. and **** me... he has created some new boxes and ticked them too... the sudden outpouring of kallislove around the globe proves that there was some reservation about him till now. the fact that he has improved his SR significantly in the last three years could be a major reason for the popularity pendulam swinging in his favor.

this has become a legitimate thread in my view now. for all practical purposes sobers is only slightly ahead of kallis in my books. the gap is closing in.

Never a doubt about Kallis for me, even before his double, I'd count him as the greatest South African test player of all time. I think people often say, "Ja, but what about guys like Pollock, Richards or Boje?" but it's Kallis for me.

Sobers is a legend among legends, to shine so brightly in a team that good takes some awesome skills, but who's to say how he would've done in the teams Kallis has played in, or vice versa. I'd always pick Kallis, just because of my bias, but I can understand why people would pick Sobers. He's got that aura that only the passing of time can generate. I think Kallis will get there, in about 20 years time.
