James Anderson vs Vernon Philander

Who is the better test bowler?

Everton Seymour

It depends on how you look at it ...

I voted for Anderson because he has had the better career and he isn't a normal bowler anyone who gets better as a seamer after their 30's is an unreal athlete , but it can also be argued that he had the better opportunities which enabled him to be a better Test bowler than Philander ..

Jimmy Anderson was given every opportunity to succeed at Test cricket with England and his success is not just on him but the wonderful structures and opportunities that exist in England... By age 26 (Same age Philander was given a Test debut by South Africa,) Anderson had a bowling average of 35 from 31 Tests..
That is a lot of tests to be averaging 35 as a specialist bowler you probably don't reach 20 tests as an SA fast bowler with that record .. Even guys who did well couldn't get much of a look in like Kyle Abbott for example who waited a long time to get decent opportunities before he went Kolpak for financial security.

The sheer volume of tests , exclusive Test only luxury contracts , Great management by Team England in rotating Broad and Anderson for tours it has contributed a lot to Anderson's success ...Swap the two Bowlers countries around the answer is very different. I think guys like Tim Southee would have 500-600 test wickets if they played for England.

Anderson by a mile. His effectiveness reduced in non-pacer friendly conditions , but he still remained pretty decent. Philander was too often worthless when there wasn't movement on offer.

Big Vern is only better in a small selection of conditions, conditions where it’s not like Anderson is useless either. Anderson has him covered in the vast majority of the rest.

Once you factor longevity he’s just far better.

Just saw it was about 70/30 so not the biggest blowout in cricweb history by any stretch.
That's just because CW has a lot of myopic Australians + general India haters

Also the few Saffas here are reasonable people, and those who dislike Jimmy also dislike Philander for the same reasons.
