Is Kohli better than Ponting?

If there was a genuine issue with Smith's technique, and he was actually so reliant on hand-eye coordination compared to other bats, he wouldn't be so successful. If you really believe that logic then you have to think that Steve Smith's got way better hand eye coordination then every other batsman in world cricket. Which is simply very unlikely.

His head is over the ball because he has superb hand eye co ordination. Ponting was the same. Then his eye went and his head started falling over.
Ponting used to fall over to the off side more than Smith, who walks across there. When Ponting was younger he was so ****ing brilliant that even if he fell over to the off side (which is normally fatal and gets you leg before) he used to clip them through mid wicket for four. Once he got older, he used to fall over even more and kept missing them.

Certainly as good if not better than anyone else in the world currently. For me his top two attributes are his eye & his temperament/concentration, not his technique.

I think the main issue, such as it is, with Smith's technique is that he gets squared up against quality outswing bowling, which is hardly a hanging offence. He is absolutely still and balanced at the point of impact, so bowling on his pads is a really bad idea.

To average over 70 in Test cricket for 5 years you can't be missing anything. You need technique, eye & temperament, and Smith has (or had) all of them maxed out. His eye is probably the factor of those that was least ahead of his peers. Players at that level all have exceptional eyes.

Ftr I think Smith, when he comes back, will not be as good as he was almost immediately, but it will be purely mental. I think time will tell that Cricket Australia destroyed him.

Yea Smith's technique works but it's not why he's successful. It's his ruthlessness and shot selection. If it was simply his technique he'd be dominating the lower level cricket he is playing in this time out of the team, instead of being mediocre. The man's a freak because of how he thinks when he bats.

I think that's why he'll be fine when his hand/eye goes. And I think Kohli will be fine too. They'll adapt and overcome because they're crazy that way.

Yeah definitely. Smith's mental strength and ruthlessness is definitely the biggest difference he has (had?) over the rest. Which is why I think he's going to come back half the player he was.

We'll see tbh. He could well reel out a bunch of "**** you" hundreds (especially appropriate since this is a thread about Ponting)

What kind of massive loser gets a nickname like king kohl? Pretty much confirms his small penis, or as I believe they say in Punjabi- shorty louder.

It's telling better players get called the people's champion, big daddy Kane or ross the boss. Root doesn't have a nickname yet because it would be unenglish
It will be an apt nickname in about 20 years when he is old.

Many great players reinvent themselves when they know they're past their physical prime. The 2 notable exceptions I can think of are Ponting and Viv. I'm team 'he's going to reel out **** you hundreds' though I think he may take time to get started.

Ponting is a certified ATG. It is hard to see Kohli not ending up as ATG. On the topic, it is hard to rate an active player with a retired one. It is more apt to have a comparison once Kohli is around 35. My bet is that he will just about surpass Ponting.

Don't think we can judge technique. I can hold a bat like Bradman but I'll end up looking like a ****ing idiot. That bloke had superb hand eye coordination but slowed down with age and went out averaging 80 in his last series. If it works for him, it just does and a player of his ability will adjust it accordingly. Orthodox techniques are overrated anyway because they're built for utility. Because of their one size fits all nature, they're limiting too. It's like how you can use Java or Basic for most purposes but for full efficiency you'll try something more specialised. As Bradman said, textbook technique can raise a subpar player to mediocrity but also reduce a great one to mehness. Paraphrasing obviously.

Tangentially related rant over.

This but you reckon the 'falling over' thing was more symptom than cause? His out cricket for his last two years was indicative of a bloke not picking up the pace of the ball as early as he used to, blokes trying hard to cover off-stump is usually from trying to fight the instinct to move to square leg.
