An update- Kapil Dev is appointed as a bowling coach. Not a bad idea, to pass on some knowledge and experience, since he is one of India's better fast bowlers, and possibly the only good fast bowler they've ever had.
Correction he is India's greatest ever cricketer, and that includes bowling.

Could someone explain why Nayan Ramlal Mongia, the best wicketkeeper in India by a country mile, does not feature? He is a very gpood wicketkeeper against spinners, and spin is India's main bowling strength, while our so-called first choice wicketkeeper, messes up against the spinners occasionally and the seam attack is just an excuse, while the so-called all-rounder, fine batsman that he is, happens to be a horrible wicketkeeper.
Simple he doesnt get on with Ganguly, and when you are captain, Ganguly gets what he wants.

Doesn't matter. He should be used as one. He's good enough to bowl the full ten overs in ODI's, and at least 25-40 overs in Tests. I would even play Karthik, Zaheer and Irfan as all-rounders in my plan, since they're not great specialist bowlers. Why Sehwag is seldom used is beyond belief, since he is quite a good bowler for a batsman.

The only allrounder in team is Powar.Neither Sehwag, nor Yuvaj,Zaheer and Pathan are allrounders.

Thats true, but besides Ganguly,it is said that Sachin strongly oppose his inclusion as Mongia threw his wicket(which was very crucial to India in that test match) in India-pak test match in '99,and for that Sachin has never fogiven Mongia.

He doesn't really care what's needed, he just wants something that satisfies his own whims and fancies. Even if it doesn't work, he'd still persist with it. He is a stubborn leader who will stick to his guns, even if they blow up in his own hands! But that does not indicate how good or bad a wicketkeeper he is- he is the best wicketkeeper in India and he has been batting with the Baroda top-6, and scoring a few runs too, so he's not that bad a selection, is he? Definitely better than Parthiv Patel and FAR better than Rahul Dravid.

He never did much justice to his batting potential, he even had to be dropped to realise it. A much better batsman than what an average of 23 in ODI's and 30-odd in Tests would suggest. He was also a very good fielder. But he was one of those players who were effective for their team- if he played well, the team played well.

At least Powar is trying to play as an all-rounder and his captain uses him as one. But the others are never used as all-rounders, which is very disappointing. They are among the best batsmen and bowlers, unlike Sanjay Bangar or Ajit Agarkar, who are just 'all-rounders' but not the best bowlers or batsmen, until now. The Indian bowling attack is nothing great andd 3-over bowlers can't win matches, so Sehwag's bowling should be used more often, like Nathan Astle. The bowlers have neither used their batting potential, nor have those in power made them do so. Ganguly happens to be a very anti-all-rounder captain, since he's just using everyone just for one skill. The Mumbai and Railways skippers have had many all-rounders playnig for them, because they have played them as all-rounders.

i think u meant bangar who is not selected anyway. anyway it was ganguly fault not bangar though he should have sacrficed but if u see the video he probably dint even get the chance to think about that.
Badani was involved in 5 run-outs in a few matches at the end. Bangar, on the other hand, was just involved in one run-out with the worst runner between wickets in the Indian team.

Nayan realises that more than anyone else, so he has tried to improve his batting in the recent past. Surely, he might have improved a lot. Why should he be dropped just because of one or two mistakes? Even convicts get a fair try. Even Deep Dasgupta, Parthiv Patel and Rahul Dravid have got an extended run, so why not him?

DRAVID(if i was selector i would pick him for only test matches)
He has been batting well in ODI's as well. He's much better than in the late 90's. Definitely better than all those so-called ODI specialists in the Indian team.

1 genuine quick bowler
The problem is- among the best fast(?) bowlers in India, there are NONE!

schewag(can bowl)
Just as much as a regular bowler.

I would defintely try to squeeze gavaskar somehow, kick ganguly till he gets somegood batting and running between wickets lessons.
Even JP Yadav was a good batsman who could bowl and much better. Both deserve a fair try, since they're both good batsmen, great fielders and decent support bowlers. Better than Bangar any day.

I agree with you.Actually the selectors have treated Mongia very unfairly, there was a time where there wasn't a decent keeper in Indian team (forget about keeper's batting) yet Mongia was a taboo word.

I think Mongia should have been recalled for Pak tour.I like Patel, but he inexperianced at the moment.

I think it is a good team except for 2 players.

Rohan Gavaskar should have been picked for Hemang badani
patel should have been dropped.

it is true that india is trying to develop a young player who promises good but it cant afford him to make mistakes like he did against aussies.

take for example the stumping chace he missed of clarke in the sydney one dayer. that cold well have turned the game in india's favour. and in a series like pakistan even one mistake can cost him dearly

then rahul dravid even he too makes mistakes behind the stumps as he is not a specialist wicket keeper.

india needs a specilist wicket keeper.

They have Nayan Mongia, Vijay Dahiya, MSK Prasad and Ajay Ratra, but there's just this problem- none of them get picked. They're looking for an Indian Adam Gilchrist, a top-notch wicketkeeper who's also a top-6 quality batsman, who does not exist.

Arjun, of the above wicket keepers I think Nayan Mongia is the best. When he used to play there was no problem with the wicket keepering. The only problem with him was the batting. and i think the others are just like patel

I have to give it mongia. His wicketkeeping was good no doubt. But he could never be depended upon with the bat. He should have worked on his batting more. Maybe he does deserve another chance since Indian batting is not just tendulkar anymore. Age is not on his side though.
