How good could Gilly have been if he never kept

Can this theoretical specialist bat Gilly reach Viv level? Wouldn't be too big a leap in tests

Also, has anyone tried the squash ball trick in a club game? Is it h4x? I'm on a gilly youtube binge atm
tried it at nets once, just feels awkward for a while then you forget about it. my game is beyond help though so don’t think it made a difference.

A pointless question that can only be answered by theories. The past has happened and "if" posts are devoid of rational thinking.

"If my auntie had balls she'd be my uncle."

i think keeping helped him. he had a free rein down at #7 to have a go and if he failed he was still a very useful gloveman.
Probably more relevant early in his career, if he decided to give up the gloves once he was established there's a fair chance he could have improved on his batting. Might have hurt Australia overall though, as good as Haddin was Gilly probably not that much of an advantage over their usual middle order blokes as he was on Haddin.

Would have improved on his poor record in the lead up to WC finals
He could really have dominated a couple of those late 90s/ early 2000s Sharjah Who Gives a **** Cups if he hadn’t kept and just opened the batting instead

he did dominate those though, but you’re right, we should omit that from his record

hmm doesn’t seem to have much substance there left then apart from a few finals where the stars aligned for him

you might be on to something

Probably would have reached Sehwag's level with the bat if Gilly didn't keep. No way on god's green earth he was as good as Viv with the bat. Not even close to that level.

With Viv batting, one could sense that extra finesse and sophistication he possessed over other murderous batsmen in his team, Greenidge and Lloyd. I get that same feeling with Gilly, clean hitter that he was, yet lacking that finesse of batsmanship that would elevate him to Viv's level.

Whatever it takes!!!
Its interesting, isn't it, whether he could have batted with the freedom he did if he did not have the other skill of wicket keeping to keep his place. But I still remember Boycott calling him the left handed Viv Richards and so I think he would have roughly done just as well with the bat in tests, and been middling like he was in ODIs.

I think it's genuinely impossible to say. Keeping certainly helped him play with freedom, which he may not have were he just a batsman, but there's some trade off in fatigue/ workload from having the gloves as well. If he's just playing as a batsman then everything changes re his spot in the order and how he has to play may change accordingly. Certainly a great player though.

If my uncle had balls, he'd be my aunt and all that. Yesterday a friend sent Barry Richards' famous pic comparing old bats with modern clubs and said imagine what Viv could've done with the new hardware. My reply was would he have even remained the Viv we knew? He would've been as impetuous no doubt, but a bat that heavy surely has to change how you wield it in fundamental ways.
