England vs New Zealand 1958: another in the series of thrashings that England handed out to visiting teams in the mid to late fifties, and the start of videos consisting mostly of TV footage, often without narration.
1st test: England bats first, Richardson is lbw to MacGibbon. May hits four off Reid(?). Laker strikes Alabaster for six. Loader is dropped badly off MacGibbon and is then bowled by Alabaster. Miller is lbw to Trueman in the third over of NZ's first innings.

Batting second on a rain soaked pitch NZ are bowled out for 47 in their first innings. In their follow on Miller is caught by Trueman off Loader, who then bowls Playle. Hartford strikes out at Lock but merely finds May at mid off. Reid falls for five off Trueman and then Sutcliffe is bowled by Bailey. Darcy, who top scored with 33, chases Trueman to Bailey and then Laker turns one past Alabaster. Locks throws out Blair before last man Hayes hits Laker for six twice in an over. He is c&b by Lock as New Zealand slide to their then second worst defeat.

Vs WA Combined XI, Perth, 2nd day. McKenzie and WA keeper Gordon Becker score freely off Clive Halse and Joe Partridge as a formerly spicy deck rapidly flattens out. McKenzie under edges P Pollock to Waite. The left armer playing opening for the home team is Hugh Bevan, who was in contention for a test spot with his performances in this match and the previous for WA proper, but played when unfit for an Australian XI later, went wicketless and was never picked. This pitch would become very flat and Barlow would score 209 and G Pollock 127.

Last day. Simpson scores 246 and Benaud 132, the latter bringing up his ton with a single off Pithey. Becker is bowled by Halse, who would play his only tests on this tour, for four.

3rd test, fourth day. Partridge bowls Booth. Someone here asked recently about people who bowled pace in glasses, Partridge is one. McKenzie landed a giant shot off him on the roof of the SCG member's stand, although I think this film shows his six off Pithey judging from the keeper being up, his 76 would remain his highest FC score.

5th test, last day. Richie Benaud's final test innings comes to an end, O'Neill is bowled by Pollock and the last few wickets fall. The off spinner is Kelly Seymour. Goddard and Barlow play out time with Benaud bowling the final ball of the match and his career.


I can never help but notice that when you do get a camera angle that shows the pitch from end on, uncommon in Australia up until 1970-ish, you often see the ball swing far more than the modern ****aburra.

1st test, 1964 Durban. England won by an innings here. Apparently in an attempt to create a rock-hard, fast wicket the curator hired a dollar from the city council and rolled the crap out of the pitch. The result was very dry and broke up, letting Allen and Titmus spin England to victory.

West Indies versus Australia 1965. This was the series that saw the West Indies confirm their place as the best team in the world for many. Unfortunately there is no sound on any of these films and they often cut in only after a wicket has fallen.

The Australians have an easy match against a Jamaican Colts side. It was here I realised that McKenzie and Mayne have startlingly similar bowling actions.

For that and the against Sobers earlier in the day Sang Hue had to be ******ed off as the lovely West Indian crowd got wild and threw beer cans at him after booing him for much of the afternoon.

Day five. Cowper is trapped in front by an in swinger from Hall. O'Neill plays a tremendous shot form a Hall no-ball but is later caught by Nurse off Gibbs. Hawke, who opened, is bowled by Solomon for 33 off 119. Thomas is bowled by Griffith.

Callen, Hughes and Higgs a decent attack for the Vics. Hookesy bowling a some seam up too. A young Dean Jones playing and Peter Sleep bowling long hops. I remember Julian Weiner but he never really kicked on. John Scholes had a long shield career but wasn't test class. However with that fc average of his might just be the man Langer would pick at No. 3 for Australia now.
