Korea DPR? Côte d'Ivoire?

North Korea. Ivory Coast. What the hell is this all about? How many other countries to we refer to in French? Do we say "République centrafricaine"? No - because that would be bloody stupid. Nor do we try to pronounce "Bosnia and Herzegovina" in Serb or Croat, because that would also be moronic. So why do we arse around with Côte d'Ivoire? Whose idea was it in the first place? It's not funny, it's not clever, it's not sophisticated. It's just bloody stupid.

Also, using the word "Democratic" to refer to Kim Jong-Il's personal fiefdom is even more sycophantic than referring to that nutjob who thinks he's in charge of Sealand as "HRH". If a country is so insecure that it wants everyone to call it "Democratic" - whilst banning its citizens from reading any dispute to it, of course - then it can go and salute itself. It began as North Korea, and it can stay that way.

Pretty sure if you ran a democratic poll, you'd find that Kim Jong-Il is immensely popular tbf...

Indeed so. In fact I personally find him infinitely preferrable to genital torture.

Neil raises a good point about The Ivory Coast tho; why do we pander to them? Is it just because we use the Latin alphabet too? Willing to bet Japan or Russia don't write the country as Côte d'Ivoire when referring to it.

No, they write it as Кот-д’Ивуар.
Pwned. :D

And isn't anyone slightly uneasy about naming a country after a banned resource? Öne of the colonial things we could probably do without I think.

(Yes, I know perfectly well Côte d'Ivoire is French for you know what. Don't agree with their government either.)

Brazil and Ivory Coast. Portugual struggled to qualify and will struggle against Brazil (who IMO are favorites) and Ivory Coast who are a very consistent side.

Ivory Coast, Ghana and Cameroon all got reasonable chances, think at least one of them will make it.

Ivory Coast have the best squad, but would take Brazil and Portugal to go through. Can't see Ghana beating Serbia or Germany either.

Reckon Algeria have as good a chance as Cameroon tho, tbh. Slovenia & America are teams they could beat and, tbh, our players don't look in prime nick just now either.
