Part of the thing with Mark Waugh is he never converted starts into big scores. His average could have been significantly higher, but he never bothered to go big because he played in teams that he didn't need to.

Similar to Keith Miller is some ways I guess.
Or, you know, because he was lazy and had a short attention span

Also because he was not good enough. He wasn't very good when he played in India for starters,, except for that one test in Bangalore.
