Cricketer Of The Year
Adam Gilchrist to miss VB Series match against Sri Lanka
Australian Cricket Board - 16 December 2002

Adam Gilchrist will miss the VB Series match against Sri Lanka in Perth on 22 December, it was announced today.

The wicketkeeper-batsman will rest a slight strain to his left groin sustained during his innings of 124 in the VB Series match against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday (15 December).

Gilchrist is also suffering from some slight soreness in his left knee, and that will also benefit from the break during Australia's current schedule.

Adam Gilchrist said: "I felt some tightness in my groin while I was batting on Sunday, but was obviously able to carry on batting without a runner and then keep wicket during the England innings.

"Looking at things from a positive perspective, although this break is enforced it will be an opportunity to rest in the middle of our busy schedule of Orange Tests and the VB Series followed by the World Cup and the West Indies Travelex tours."

Gilchrist, who was named man of the match for his performance on Sunday, is now returning to Perth.

The squad for the VB Series match in Perth will be announced at 1100 Melbourne time on Wednesday 18 December.

Australia's next action after that VB Series match is the fourth Orange Test match in Melbourne, starting on December 26. That squad will be named at 1100 Melbourne time on Thursday 19 December.

Considering his innings on the weekend, expect the replacement to be Ryan Campbell.

id prefer Haddin in there, but it will be Campbell, and i really hope he is given a chance to open the batting with hayden.

Yeah I seriousely cant understand Campbells selection above Haddin.

Haddin is one HELL of a good hitter of the ball. Probably one of the very best in the world and hes more than that hes a very good batsman.

And I think his keeping is just as good and hes also young.

NSW have been batting him at 7 in OD games with really sucks he has always done well as an oppener but now there using Richards who is doing nothing.

See even England's luck can't change, when it has nothing to do with them... Why can't he miss the England games :( :( :( :(

As for who to take over...well not seen much of the two mentioned, but heard nothing but good things... just wondering whatever happened to the guy who was always understudy to Gilly.. W.Seccome (sp???)

Seccombe's fallen away from international consideration as his batting wasn't deemed good enough, I think. Like Jack Russell, really.

Which is a big joke when you consider Russell averages more than Stewart does (when Stewart keeps). Why they couldn't play Stewart as a specialist batsman, and Russell as a Healy-like number 7 I'll never know.

Because we've always needed 5 bowlers to get sides out. That's the bottom line...
