2 warm-up games of 2 days each. What kind of practice is that. Maybe a bazball warm-up. Didn't realise one Test is a day/night game at Mt Maunganui.
Think it will be the same team as last Test of summer -

Crawley Duckett (was Lees) Pope Root Brook Stokes Foakes Broad Robinson Leach Anderson

Tom Flint

International Regular
With the sqaud picked for nz I'd like to see a bowling attack of
Stokes
Robinson
Leach
Stone
Anderson
Which leaves broad on the side, I can't see him being happy about that but maybe they will rotate in the 2nd test to get him in.

Jennings, Wood, Ahmed and J.Overton.

So, an Asian track specialist, an 18 year old, a perenially injured quick they're being careful with and Jamie Overton. So of those Overton is probably the one hard done to as Grecian says. But he's not exactly got a wealth of supporters clamouring for him to be in the side either.
Livingstone too right?

After the India test Root had 927 runs at 61.80 from 18 innings.

His final 9 innings against Saffers and Pakistan brought 171 runs at 19.

I think the fact we won 5/6 matches without our best batsman doing anything of note. Is quite incredible and such a turnaround to recent years. Where if Root didn't score, we were absolutely humped.

Real testament to other players stepping up. I expected Root to break the record for most test runs at the half way point of the year.

Nearly everyone improved under Stokes

Root as captain 46.44 - under Stokes 52.85
Bairstow under Root - 29.57 - under Stokes 75.66
Crawley 27.80 - 29.85
Foakes 28.11 - 43.42
Pope 29.64 - 37.78
Stokes 36.98 - 39.37
Robinson 21.28 - 17.66
Anderson 21.17 - 19.18
Wood 29.94 - 27.30

Broad 26.20 - 27.17
Leach 31.88 - 40.29

Even Root's slip catching improved.

There is no way in the world I would leave Broad out for Stone.

Roy continuing his wretched form. 71 runs @ 11.83avg @ 92.2 sr in the SA t20. This ODI series in SA starting in less than a week maybe his last chance assuming he's even selected in the final xi.
Will Jacks on the other hand 204 runs @40.8 avg @ 196.15sr. Putting himself in consideration for future T20 teams.

I think Roy is very much on borrowed time in both T20 and ODI.

We have so many options at the top of the order that it's hard to see Roy getting a slot in the team when his form is so poor and has been for a while now.

I hope otherwise but feel a bit down about the transition from Roy-Bairstow-Root-Morgan-Stokes-Buttler to a messy array of varying shades of promising players at all the same time. Two retirements, an injury to Bairstow, Root barely plays the format, now Roy can't justify a place on form.

Are we going to miss the top six that won the world cup in white ball games as much as the top six we had 10 years ago in tests? Which makes me feel like squeezing everything we can out of it before the come latelys take over. Roy-Bairstow is maybe the best ODI opening partnership of all time, with the most runs per stand and the best strike rate of all regular opening pairs.

The batting thing doesn't seem to be working at all. Worth a try though. Made 0 today, slightly better bowling.

Archer fit, Stone not playing.

Archer getting overs under his belt, so far 19.0. Stone 9.3. Don't think Stone will get a chance in the ODIs - Woakes Topley Archer Curran Ali Rashid. Reserves Willey, Stone
