Norwood's on Fire
if memory serves he dealt in a high % of boundaries and had very limited scoring areas. mostly through cover and square. he was very easy to shut down.

it annoyed me that they kept going back to him cause he clearly didn't have the game to succeed in white ball cricket.
Yeah I think that's it. His cover drive was easily stopped in ODIs so they could dry him up.

Probably would have been a good ODI player in the earlier days of the format.

I get the feeling that C Overton, who was in the squad for the 4 Tests, was given a ODI place as compensation for being a 12th man. Hasn't even got a good record in list A bowling. Made his ODI debut 4 years ago and had played 4 matches.

Also think that Robinson and Curran will replace the Overtons in the SA Test series.

Curran's still not bowling many overs for anyone. Jamie Overton has the potential to be useful but, as I moaned elsewhere, someone needs to persuade him to pitch the ball up instead of pitching it half way down the pitch just because he's a bit quicker than average. Maybe you're right and we shouldn't still be talking about potential at his age.

id like to see Broad replaced by Scrimshaw or Gleason rather than Curran or Overton. I dont know anything about their county form but they looked pretty good in the Blast ( Broad is a fairy princess whether he takes wickets or not in my humble opinion)

Gleeson is probably too old to be considered a prospect for Tests unfortunately, he didn't start playing cricket professionally til his late twenties. He did well in the Championship at Northants but has been plagued by injury problems since his move to Lancs and is now more of a white ball specialist as a result.

is topley fit enough to be an all format bowler?
Last season he bowled 199.5 overs 21 wickets at 29.33 (7 games)
This year 105.4 overs 9 wickets at 31.55 (3 games)

The hopefuls (Curran, Woakes, Robinson) will need to play in either one or both championship games that happen before the 1st Test

Why would England change their bowling line-up for the next Test series? Potts has done very well, Leach has a ten-fer, Anderson is still peerless, and I can't see Stokes arbitrarily dropping Broad having publicly backed the pair of them. If they do then I've have thought Joverton was still the next cab off the rank.

I pretty much agree with you, not a fan of change for change's sake at all, but to play devil's advocate slightly the powers that be might see SCurran's or Topley's lefthandedness or JOverton's extra pace as a point of difference from the slightly samey RFM dominated seam attack in situ.

Pace isn't everything, Test batsmen are used to it. J Overton isn't that fast anyway, maybe 88mph. If you were talking about Archer 92mph or Wood who bowls at 94mph, maybe a different story.

Two salient questions atm,

With Morgan gone and Roy out of form, will Hales be given a chance?

Can England keep picking someone with an FC average of 29.6 in 83 matches as test opener?

1)No

2)Also no but because Rob Key is holding me at gunpoint right now, the answer is yes

In the end, it's an aging side as it is, don't see them going back to Hales or Vince, when there are plenty of younger options who smash the ball for fun.

the answer to your second question is, I suspect, until we start losing.

Why people blame Morgan for Hales not being picked, I don't know. Hales has repeatedly behaved like a complete moron. How could he be trusted?

I've come across a fair few comments about bringing back Vince, even as a rather short term option for the T20 and ODI world cups. Some have even suggested that he replaces Buttler as captain so that Jos can concentrate on being a world beater in these forms of the game.

Ridiculously knee-jerk IMHO, was a weird batch of one-day comps for England, two massive names retiring, half-a dozen bowlers missing, and Buttler being catapulted into captaincy ahead of time.

Another seismic change possibly not what's needed particularly by bringing in a guy who is average at best for England.
