Draft Idea - Feedback Appreciated

Hey guys,

I had an idea for a Draft whilst I was on vacation and I want to stake it out first because it might not work. Partly Anyway, the idea is as follows. It's title would be something along 'Pick the Other Guy's Team Draft'.

  • 11 drafters
  • First round is like an normal Draft - you pick a player.*
  • For the next 10 rounds, you pick a player for a different Drafter, changing each round. So over the 10 rounds, you pick one player for each Drafter.
  • It will be a standard ATG Test draft with no other restrictions.

Basically, in each round you pick a player for a different Drafter, so in the 10 rounds, you pick one player for each Drafter, so along with the solo pick at the beginning/end, a complete team is made by having 10 people pick 10 players for you. Obviously it's paramount that proper teams are made, so I don't know whether to put in restrictions on team structures (6 batsmen, 1 WK, 1 AR, 4 bowlers or something similar) or just trust people to make sensible teams, and not fill a particular team with 11 Bangladeshi medium pacers - although that would be quite fun :P

I liked this draft idea because it adds a really strategic element - do you pick a rubbish player for a guy and hope he doesn't return the favour, or do you give him a good one and risk missing out on a player you want. I think it's also good because there is so much potential for interesting subplots amongst the interplay between all the drafters. In other drafts, you only have to think about your team, but in this draft, you have to think about every team, and hope people give you decent players.

Obviously, it would be quite a logistical effort, so I'll generate all the rounds before hand, but I'm torn on the way to operate the rounds: either on a simple scrolling system, so if Player A picks for Player B 2nd round, then he picks for C next round, D round after etc. (like the system Mr. Mister employed during his ODI draft), or on a completely randomised system. The latter would be more difficult logistically, but I could probably pull it off.

So, before I immediately launch this draft, I'd like to hear input from others: if they're interested, if they have any tweaks for the design, or if they have any questions. Also is my maths right? 10 or 11 drafters needed to make this work over 11 rounds?

*Would this round be better at the end?

It will be fun. I am in.

Don? Minimum tests? Since its an ATG draft, I'd advice you to keep it open since players like Richards, Procter are AG materials.

I don't know about the Don, maybe I'll say no Don in the First Round, so you can't pick him for yourself, but can give him to someone else.

Yeah I won't put a limit on the number of tests because, as you say, there are quality operators who only played a handful of tests.

Whatever it takes!!!
Sounds like an interesting idea in theory.. Just wondering how you will work out who is picking for whom, or will that order be revealed at the end of the round based on some randomization algorithm?

- Pick for yourself in R1. This way you won't shortchange other drafters just to have a chance to pick a certain player yourself later on.
- Don't restrict the player pool or team structure IMO. Kick people out if they're being ****s.
- In.

You will need some kind of restrictions on players to be picked eg must have played at least 20 tests. Otherwise everyone would just have a team of spuds we'd never heard of and it'd be much of a muchness.

This makes sense. Are people willing to shed players like Richards, Procter & Pollock for this? Personally I'm fine with it.

Yes, I'll just randomise it each time, and ensure there are no repeats in the rounds. I know a couple of websites, but does anyone know of a good one to do this sort of task?

OK, the personal round will be the first round.

Player pool is up in the air, although Howe makes a very good point. Would prefer not to have to kick people out, as that would screw everything up, although if people don't want a rigid team structure, so be it.

Ideally we should not know whom we are picking for until the end of the round... That would make it more fun, if you can set conditions for each round as a batsman round, bowler round etc...

That sounds like a good idea, it would ensure team structure remained consistent, and would streamline drafting a little bit. What do people think? I'm fine with whatever people want. Would we have a specialist 'Wicket-Keeper' round?

Ok sounds good, in

Each round being a 'type' of player is best. Otherwise we'd have to keep posting who's in our side as we went through.
5 bats
Keeper
AR
4 bowlers*

*if people end up with Miller or Imran or Hadlee as all rounder and then three other front line pace options it will screw over their side a bit. So perhaps two pace bowler rounds and one spin round and an option round where we each "suggest" a player type we want?

It might be a good idea to allow PMs to encourage back-room dealing.

Red Hill: "Seems like you need a good No.3 batsman, and I need a Spinner". If I give you Rohan Kanhai will you give me Bill O'Reilly?"

KK: "No, but I'll give you Hedly Verity instead".

Red Hill: "OK, deal. Kanhai for Verity".

KK: "Deal".
If you allow lobbying then you might not need any restrictions, and you call the Draft, 'The Dirty Deals Draft', or something like that.

Just a thought.

I will not enter the draft, but I would think that knowing which contestant you are picking a player for is paramount.

If person X has already picked for me, he doesn't threaten me. So I will pick a crap player for him.

Going a step back, person X will know who he picks for me will not influence me when it comes to my turn to pick for him. So X will also pick a crap player for me. Irrespective of what others do, it is in my (everyone's) interest to pick crap players for others.
