Does India deserve to be ranked 8th in Oneday Ranking?

The WC finalist are ranked 8th in the latest ICC onedayer ranking.I don't know as to how the ranking works , but it sees wierd to me.

I can think of a number of teams that should be ranked lower than Indian team.I think Ganguly's men deserves a better deal.

The CW Rankings:

1 Australia 1404 (+2)
2 New Zealand 1088 (-2)
3 England 1036 (-7)
4 South Africa 1020
5 Sri Lanka 991 (-66)
6 Pakistan 955 (+67)
7 India 904 (-6)
8 West Indies 775 (-2)
9 Zimbabwe 325 (-29)
10 Kenya 260 (-10)
11 Bangladesh 14

The ICC rankings are very responsive to single series results.. both sets are very close 2-8, but the fact is that the rankings take into account neither potential nor players, but results, and well, India don't win enough.

Well India might not have been winning enough matches lately but surely they weren't doing so awfully to be ranked so low.

Well SA might be debatable, but England just beat them, WI won the Champions trophy, Pakistan just beat them, Sri Lanka won the Asian Trophy, NZ are a very good side and Australia are Australia.

Seems as though ATM they deserve to be where they are, albeit by a small margin

India against the other 7 teams worth playing since WC 03:

Australia: 2-8
England: 1-2
NZ: 1-1
Pakistan: 3-6
SA: 1-1
SL: 1-2
WI: 0-0

Total record: P29 W9 L20. That's why you're eighth.

Didn't knew India was playing so badly, interestingly many ppl still believe that only India can match Australia.

So what do you think about Indian ONEDAY team? Are they bad as a team?

They have potential, undoubtedly, but they need to turn it into results before they can climb the rankings. Top teams play badly and still win.

Well if a side wins more games, they're ranked higher - it's pretty simple really.

even at its best, india tends to lose a few games, prolly what happened last year, while at its worst, they lose a lot. thats why we'll never be ranked top or thereabouts

India deserve to be 8th on current form. Unfortunately for us Indian fans, they've been rather uninspiring as Neil's post says it all really.

I have noticed that after Srinaths' retirement, things have really gone downhill, mainly due to the fact because there is no 'decent' fast bowler in the side anymore, but just flimsy rookies and overrated liabilities.

i don't think srinath's absence has affected india that much, mainly because even though on pure ability, he is easily the second best pace bowler for india all-time, his attitude really sucked till the end...and he ended up as a huge underachiever....but you are right about the current bunch, zaheer, i feel is heavily overrated in india....i doubt whether he will get into the final 15 of any of the other top teams....and he is supposedly our best bowler....nehra and aa, the less said about them the better....pathan, shows a lot of promise....but not much of match winning capability so far....we have been sustained as usual by our spinners....kumble and harb....

A bowler doesn't have to be world class to be the best bowler for a particular country. Zaheer Khan would not get into any other top Test team XI (not even the West Indies IMO) but he may still be India's best bowler atm, because whilst there's talent, for performance quality the cupboard still appears to be bare.

IMO Kumble is far and away India's best bowler though - seamer and spinner.

did anyone read the article on cricinfo saying may be kumble should retire from ODIs to prolong his career. seems to make sense to me...

It seems strange to note that India are ranked eighth, but I can't see who I'd move below them - and I genuinely believe that the WI are a better one-day side.

It strikes me that there was some overexcitement over their WC03 result; and maybe some "bleed" in terms of people's evaluation of their test prospects being applied to their one-day form.

Do they deserve to be? Unfortunately the answer is yes. I still personally do not believe they are 8th though, but their results show that they are. *shrugs*

Maybe, but i think the team combination is totally messed up. I mean what's the point in going with 7 regular batsmen and just 4 regular bowler on a flat track of Eden garden?

india should go into the match with 5 regular bowlers, they shouldn't undermine the role of a specialist bowler and should stop being totally dependent on its batting lineup.
