I've followed, watched probably every ball he has played for firebirds and beyond since the last 4 years. When I saw him first I thought he's all right. Didn't look like a Sachin or Lara but just about all right. Knew he will be a long term firebirds player. A black cap and as successful as he has shown so far? No way.
There's a reason to it. He was very strong square on the off, wasn't all that great leg side, barely played a straight drive and was very uncomfortable when bowled at the ribs. Still he knew how to score runs, wait for the bowlers to make the mistake and back his strength.
Fast forward by a year, I saw he was not only playing square on off but was starting to hit through extra covers meaning he had started to score off the 4th and 5th stump balls as well. Promptly he scored way more than the previous year. In this time he was also playing t20s, one day format and doing really well.
In the last year and half I've seen him play straight, leg side both square and in front of mid wicket. His wrist work through leg side has improved immensely and now has a mean pull shot. He's still uncomfortable playing balls on his ribs, he doesn't have a back foot clip in his armory yet but I can guarantee we will see that come through in the next couple of months or three or by the time our season starts.
As for playing spin, first year with firebirds he was defending next to the pads, sweep shot wasn't a go to shot, used the feet to hit over the top only and didn't rotate strike against spin as much.
Fast foward to now, he can sweep, paddle, use the feet and hit on the ground as well as in the air, defends in front of the pads and rotates strike over real quick.
For now he's a near complete batsman... Moreover from what I've heard one of the most down to earth bloke. We have seen a lot of south africans and aussies in wellington try and ply their trade. He's nothing like those. They were more than satisfied to play at first class, barely turned up at club, drank a barrel and didn't believe they can make it to the next level. Arrogance in performance is good but arrogance outside of cricket is not a great quality, it stops a player from learning. Clubs will acknowledge they were good in drips when they benefited.
When Devon made it to firebirds they weren't a consistently winning side. Yes it's not just because of him firebirds won trophies but his contribution has been major on and off the field.
I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever he will go more than all right, everyone will have a blip or two and he will too but I'm more than convinced he'll find a way out of the quicksand if he comes across one. Top level sport form is constantly shifting, one minute it's all glorious and the next a quicksand. Some get sucked into it fast but I think Conway will know how to get out of it quicker than some. Everyone will have to fall and stumble at the top level. No way out of it but I think he'll go all right for years to come... I'm totally convinced about it.
