The quarterfinals of the French Open will see two United States-CWLand showdowns as each country produced two quarterfinalists on an action-packed eighth day of men's singles action. Continuing his awesome run of form, Jojo Mustard produced perhaps his best performance yet with a four-set victory over 21st seed Becker Haas. The German number one came into the match on the back of a straight sets thrashing of twelfth seed Tiago Matias, and started brightly to hold service easily. But the underdog Mustard came out of the blocks with a bang as he managed to break Haas' service twice to take the first set 6-3. But the early excitement soon dissipated as Haas came flying back into the match with some well executed winners which proved too good for the nervous CWLander. Mustard, who shelved his grass court assault for a week, seemed to struggle to break free against the ever-consistent Haas as the 21st seed managed to level the match at a set all. But as has been the case all tournament, Mustard could not be counted out - the world number 42 taking the third in a tiebreaker before taking full advantage of an early break of service in the fourth to seal a momentous 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory.

Despite the fact he's beaten two players of a higher ranking, Mustard's toughest test so far will likely come in the quarterfinals as Dwayne Murdoch awaits. The 28th seeded American came into the match against surprise Norwegian sensation Kim Vollan, somewhat unfairly, as underdog. But the Australian Open quarterfinalist held his nerve against the explosive Norwegian as he decimated the world number 67 in three brief sets - 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Murdoch is perhaps the play that Mustard doesn't want to face; he's well-versed on all surfaces and is the epitome of a consistent performer; the CWLander would have no doubt fancied his chances more against the unpredictable Vollan in such a high profile contest.

But undoubtedly the most hotly anticipated contest of the quarterfinals will be the showdown between world number one Jason Hall and world number eight Sven Oxenstierna after the pair took convincing fourth round wins. Oxenstierna managed to edge past rival Illya Altman in four sets in an entertaining encounter which lasted over three hours. With both men coming off gruelling five-set wins in the third round, it was Oxenstierna who came out looking in tip-top shape as his Ukrainian opponent looked a little stiff. Whilst the ninth seed managed to break back from 3-4 down, he went on to drop the first set on the back of a pair of double faults. It was a similar story in the second set, though this time Altman got the early break of service against the fragile weapon of The Ox. But the eighth seed immediately forced his way back into the match by keeping the set on service, before again breaking the Altman serve to take a massive two set lead. But he would be forgiven for being somewhat worried as Altman looked to go one step further than what Jean-Alain Depuis could in the third round - taking the third set quite comfortably. But Oxenstierna would ensure that the ninth seed would go one step shorter of the French veteran; a confident fourth set performance sealing a 75, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 passage to the quarterfinals.

After an indifferent week in Düsseldorf at the World Team Cup, top seed Jason Hall seems to have put some worrying form behind him after he put in a clinic against thirteenth seed Henry Charles. Charles had looked in fairly impressive form in his earlier matches, and after dropping just one set for the tournament he came into the clash with confidence. But in arguably his best performance on clay this season, Hall left the Brit stunned as he ran through the first set in just over twenty minutes to bagel the world number fifteen. It was more of the same in the second as Hall this time put a breadstick on Charles; his attacking play sounding out a warning to the other eight quarterfinalists (namely the world number two). Whilst Charles put on a better showing in the third to avoid complete humiliation, the result was never in doubt as Hall produced a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 masterpiece to advance to the quarterfinals. Hall's recent form sees him look like a completely different player than the one who lost to The Ox in Düsseldorf; tournament organisers will no doubt be licking their lips at the prospect of a final for the world number one ranking between Hall and Daniel Páez Blanco.

Unseeded CWLand pairing Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen will face off with red-hot Belgian duo Yves Parmentier and Mark Harmel in what is set to be a very exciting quarterfinal clash in the men's doubles. Drake and Korpinen took little over an hour and a half to defeat Nilikar Midid and Brett Read in straight sets; the Croatia-CWLand connection falling apart after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. Drake and Korpinen ran out to an early 3-0 lead as they piled the pressure on their opponents, but Read and Midid managed to snare a late break of service to ensure the match would go deep into the first. But a handy couple of serves from Jefferson Drake gave the CWLand duo some much-needed breathing room as they edged towards a one-set to love lead. The second set, however, was much less difficult for Drake and Korpinen as they met very little resistance; cruising to a 7-6(3), 6-2 win thanks mainly to some great teamwork both at the net and around the court. Parmentier and Harmel will be their toughest prospect yet; the Belgians have not lost a set all tournament and yesterday accounted for Jean-Alain Depuis and Pierre L'Estrange to back up their dominant win over the second seeds.

In the upset of the day, Hugh James and Ralph Robinson produced some superb tennis to upstage title contenders János and Zoltan Varga in three sets. The American pair dropped the first set quite convincingly, before they began to pick up the pace early in the second on the back of a first up break of service. The Hungarian brothers seemed to struggle to put away easy shots, and the American pair pounced as they set up an appetising quarterfinal with Andrej Konc and Evgeniy Maximov with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.

The final quarterfinal was also booked, and it is probably the most eagerly anticipated of the lot as first seeds meet eighth seeds. Top seeds Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio were taken to three sets for the third time this tournament; but they managed to pull off a come-from-behind victory to defeat hard-working Russian duo Sergey Malachenko and Alexey Yarkin. Meanwhile, Moroccan brothers Ross and Hayden Onwye continued to steamroll their opposition as they produced their best performance of the tournament; a 6-1, 6-4 demolition job of local hopes and ninth seeds Mikel Fosdike and Christian Mary.

  • Seeded players out: Mikel Fosdike / Christian Mary; Sergey Malachenko / Alexey Yarkin; János Varga / Zoltan Varga.

Mustard on top of the world reaching his first ever grand slam quarter final. Hopefully he can keep up his great form. Will be another tough contest, but confidence is high in the Mustard camp. To say he's 'keen' is an understatement...

FRENCH OPEN I: Men's Quarterfinals Preview
The Season I French Open Men's Quarterfinals have now been set.

Jason Hall USA (1) vs Sven Oxenstierna CWL (8). My how things have changed within a fortnight. World number one Jason Hall was in horrible form as he fell in his first match in Madrid, and backed it up with some very scratchy form at the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf. But over the past week we've seen him finish his clay court season a high; the top seed dropping just two sets and hitting his peak form with a straight sets humiliation of thirteenth seeded Brit Henry Charles. Meanwhile, The Ox has also played some good tennis to back up his fine week in Düsseldorf. After two straight set victories first up, the world number eight was finally tested in a five-set slog in the third round. After escaping with a near miss against local fairytale Jean-Alain Depuis, Oxenstierna put up a much more secure performance against Illya Altman. A week ago, I picked Oxenstierna to make a finals appearance on the back of his 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 win over the world number one in the World Team Cup final, but after Hall's win over Charles I can't look past him. Mad Professah's pick: Hall in 5 sets.

Dwayne Murdoch USA (28) vs. Becker Haas GER (21) Jojo Mustard CWL
. Probably the most unlikely pairing to be facing off in a Grand Slam semifinal; it would have only been topped by a Kim Vollan victory in the fourth round. Vollan was in hot form heading into his clash with Murdoch, but the 28th seed proved far too good for the big man and ran away with it in three. Favourites have basically fallen apart like a deck of cards against Mustard over the last week, but I didn't expect the normally solid Haas to continue that trend (and I'm not sure that Jojo did either!). Still, he won in four and will take in all the confidence he needs against Australian Open quarterfinalist Dwayne Murdoch. Predicting a winner here is difficult; Murdoch has been taken to five sets twice but probably has a better chance of beating Mustard than guys in the mould of Cowan and Haas. I suspect the dream run of Mustard will come to an end here, but then again I also predicted it to come to an end in the third round against János Varga. Mad Professah's pick: Murdoch in 4 sets.

Juan Moreno ARG (11) vs. Radivoj Daneu SRB (3). Much like Hall, Daneu has experienced a renaissance of sorts after a scary week in Düsseldorf which saw him lose two from three. The world number three, however, put his best foot forward in the fourth round with a four-set win against Carlo Amato - the Italian star rarely troubling the rampant Serb. In all reality, Daneu will feel somewhat lucky to have made it past the second round as he gave up a two sets to love lead against Haiku Morkel. It was an experience that eleventh seed Juan Moreno also would rather forget; he looked far too confident after taking the first two sets against Antonio Bachunelli and it nearly cost him. Moreno has done exceptionally well to make it out of a very tough string of matches, but Daneu presents another test which may be too much. It is a tough call here, but I can't look past the third seed who looked ominous in his fourth round match as opposed to a complacent Moreno. Mad Professah's pick: Daneu in 4 sets.

József Boros HUN (6) Oneil Stewart JAM vs. Daniel Páez Blanco ESP (2). I'm not sure there's any real question over the result of this matchup - rather it is a question of how far Stewart can take the Spaniard. For three matches in a row the Jamaican star has prevailed in three-set tussles, the latest of which being a hard-fought win over the Hungarian Boros. But whilst Stewart has spent nearly thirteen hours on court, Blanco has spent just eight and will find himself comparatively fresher than his hard-working counterpart. Even more ominous for Stewart is that the Spaniard was clinical in his demolition of Li Wang in the fourth round and will look to continue to grow from strength-to-strength as the tournament progresses. Stewart's best chance will be to strike early as Blanco's endurance makes him frustratingly tough to beat in the third set and beyond. Unfortunately for Oneil, he's only managed to claim fifty per cent of sets one and two this tournament and Blanco shouldn't have any trouble extending his record to 36-0 on clay. Mad Professah's pick: Blanco in 3 sets.

TS+ Turin; TS+ Scheveningen (R32) - June 1-8, Season I

2 June, I

Sporting Challenger I
Round of 32 - Turin

Draw

Top seed Jamee Hancianu was unfortunately the only of the CWLand seeds to make it through to the second round in Turin after he romped past unseeded Aussie Harry Thompson in straight sets. One of the few players on tour that Hancianu is older then, Thompson looked little match for the world number 27 who raced to a 6-0, 6-3 win. Qualifier Vladimir Stakhanov was the best performed of the losing CWLanders as he fell just short in three sets against seventh seed Michael De Kinsele. The Russian-born Stakhanov traded sets with the Italian 23-year old in rallies which largely took place from behind the baseline. With the pair trading breaks in the decider, it was De Kinsele whose superior experience allowed him to take the all-important take break of service to seal a hard-fought 7-6(1), 4-6, 7-5 win.

Elsewhere, eighth seed Sven Svensson failed to impress in his first tennis in some time as the world number 127 fell to Spain's Javier Villaneuva. The Spanish 25-year old played flamboyant tennis to catch the solid Svensson off-guard; the eighth seed struggling to get into the match against an aggressive world number 138. In two tight sets it was the Spaniard who produced a confidence-boosting victory as he cruised to a 7-5, 7-5 win. Finally, Jarko Maxum failed to reproduce his form last week in Alessandria as he fell to a most depressing loss to Italy's Luca Rossi. Ranked 273rd in the world, the 22-year old Rossi played some entertaining tennis in front of a happy local crowd. The young prospect from CWLand was well below his best and suffered from a tough last week of tennis - Rossi advancing to the second round 7-5, 6-1.

  • Seeded players out: Sven Svensson; Niko UIemek.

Siemens Open I
Round of 32 - Scheveningen

Draw

In The Netherlands, qualifier Lawrence Trumper-Smith, the only CWLand player in the draw, kept his hopes alive by advancing to the second round. The controversial CWLander played well in his 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2 win over Andy Russell of Wales; coming back from a tight first set loss to run through the unseeded Brit. Trumper-Smith has worked hard on his game after employing some of the finest tennis coaches around the world, but will need to play beyond his talents as he faces top seed Danijel Micic. The Serb took out his frustrations after a first round French Open exit by decimating Mischa Pasveer and will hope to continue his path to the Scheveningen crown.

  • Seeded players out: Gjorgi Dinov; Fok Zhenyu.

Few were surprised about the result on centre court, but it was the margain that surprised many as Oneil Stewart exited the tournament with barely a wimper as Daniel Páez Blanco advanced to his first Grand Slam semifinal in straight sets. Stewart started brightly by holding serve authoritatively and looked as if he was on song after a bunch of gruelling preliminary matches. But with the score locked at 1-1 in the first, a hesitant Stewart frustratingly served up two straight double faults to drop his serve. In just over half an hour, the world number two clinched the first set and quickly set about bashing his way through the second set by flying to a 2-0 lead. Stewart, however, fought back to break the usually solid Blanco service before levelling the set at 2-2. But he remained nervous on service, and it was the Spaniard who capitalised to get the break in the eighth game of the set; a break of service which handed him an uncatchable lead to fly to a two set lead. The crowd (and it seemed Stewart, too) saw the match as good as finished, and Blanco was not keen to let them down as a sub-half hour third set completed a fine stroll out in the Parisian sun as he advanced to the semis 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

His opponent, however, will not be third seed Radivoj Daneu; rather Madrid finalist Juan Moreno awaits in the semifinals after he continued his fantastic form in a five-set marathon with the Serbian sensation. In a match of chopping-and-changing momentum, Moreno and Daneu traded alternate sets to ensure the match went to a deciding fifth. Moreno, with a good few inches on his Serbian opponent, started well to shoot out to a 3-0 lead on the back of some powerful serves and inch-perfect returns. Whilst Daneu managed to break back, he could not claw his way into the set as Moreno drew first blood. But in a mirror image of the first, Daneu attacked the powerful Argentine service to gain an early break of service which he was able to cling on to to close out the set with some consistent serving. The match continued in much the same vein as the big Argentine leapt back into the lead thanks to a late break, but he went into the deciding set looking somewhat shaky as Daneu played perhaps his best tennis yet in the fourth to level the match at two sets each. But the defining point of the match came in the sixth game of the fifth set; after both trading breaks to open the set it was Moreno who shot ahead to a massive 4-2 lead. Whilst Daneu managed to bring up four break point opportunities in a marathon ninth game on Moreno's service, he was unable to convert as the Argentine number one advanced to the biggest match of his career 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Top seeds Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio have met their end in the quarterfinals of the men's doubles tournament after eighth seeds Hayden and Ross Onwye prevailed in a hotly-contested three set classic. After being taken the journey in every match this tournament, it seemed fitting for the world number ones to be rigorously tested by the Moroccan brothers. Things started poorly for the Spanish pairing as the Onwye Brothers broke service early; the Spaniards taken aback by the aggressive approach of the underdogs as they looked to continue their good form. But after taking the first set 6-3, the Moroccans were faced with a tooth-and-nail fight back from the top seeds who were keen not to exit in straight sets. A late break of service as a result of a perfectly placed drop shot from Emelio handed the Spaniard the second set; the Moroccans scratching around early in the decider to be level at 2-2. But after two-and-a-half hours of nail biting action, it was the eighth seeds who prevailed 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 to rob Spain of the chance of doing the double.

Their opponents in the semifinals will be Israeli pairing Tal Cohen and Raz Teper after the unseeded duo ousted fifth seeds Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir in a straight sets thrashing. Hadir hoped to join his compatriots in the semifinals, but was left disappointed as Cohen and Teper raced through the first set 6-3 thanks to a couple of late breaks. The favourites looked a shadow of the team that crushed Chinese pair Gai Kai and Lu Xun in the third round as the Israelis combined brilliantly at the net to break early in the second. Bachunelli and Hadir played slightly improved tennis in the second set, but were left wanting as Cohen and Teper advanced 6-3, 6-3.

If world number two Daniel Páez Blanco has his way, there will be a new number one player at the end of the week as top seed Jason Hall fell in a five-set thriller to eighth seed Sven Oxenstierna in a bumper quarterfinal in Paris. The Ox was forced to come from a set down to defeat the favourite to extend his record over Hall to 2-0. In a tight first set, both men surprisingly (in Hall's case) under the pressure of the occasion as neither held service in their first three attempts. But as they settled into the contest, Hall managed to hold first with a beautiful forehand winner as the set ambled towards a tiebreaker. With both men looking in roaring form, Hall wilted first on the final point of the set as he put a backhand into the net to hand the first set to the CWLander. But keen to stay in the contest, Hall managed to break the deadlock late in the second set to shoot out to a 6-5 lead, before overcoming a 0-30 deficit to serve out the set. It was a similar story in the third set; Hall this time breaking serve early as he romped to a 5-2 lead before trading breaks with the world number eight to take an important lead. But with the scores level at 3-3 in the fourth, Oxenstierna managed two breaks thanks to some well-placed returns to ensure the match would head to a climactic decider. In a tense fifth set which lasted over an hour, it was Oxenstierna who prevailed after finally converting his first of six break points to secure a historic 7-6(5), 5-7, 3-6, 6-3, 9-7 upset.

He will not, however, play countryman Jojo Mustard in the semifinals after the dream run of the CWLander came to a screeching halt in the first match of the day against Dwayne Murdoch. The 28th seed played some quite brilliant tennis as he out-fought and overpowered his lower ranked opponent. In just twenty three minutes, the world number thirty took the first set 6-1 thanks to a combination of powerful groundstrokes, and nervousness on behalf of the CWLander Mustard. Despite having surprised many over the past week and a half, Mustard struggled to assert himself on his unfavoured clay surface against the deep-hitting Murdoch who continued his surprising run through the tournament to take the second set 6-3. But Mustard looked to breathe a brief glimmer of hope into his prospects as he finally produced chances on the Murdoch serve; breaking the American in fourth and eighth games to edge within a set of the 28th seed. But in a hard-fought fourth set, Mustard failed to hold on to a 40-15 lead; Murdoch wrestling his way back into the game before finally taking the match after three opportunities to seal it on Mustard's service. Murdoch's 6-1, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory sees him become the first African-American man to make a Grand Slam semifinal, but he will face his toughest test yet against the world's number eight.

CWLand pair Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen have kept their men's doubles hopes alive after claiming a surprise straight sets win in the quarterfinals against Belgian pair Yves Parmentier and Mark Harmel. Harmel and Parmentier had been in ominous form as of late, but found themselves wanting against the makeshift pair from the isle of CWLand. The first set largely went on service as all four men started strongly by holding service, before the CWLand pairing drew first blood to get the break for a 3-2 lead. Whilst the Belgians brought up a couple of opportunities to get back into the set, they were unable to capitalise as Korpinen served it out to give the underdogs the early lead. Harmel and Parmentier again struggled to get into stride, and paid for it immediately as Parmentier dropped his serve. Drake looked safe as houses to hand the CWLand duo a 2-0 lead; the set progressing to a stage where the youngster was left to serve to stay in the match. But despite being ahead 30-0, the Belgian favourites failed to retain their lead as they crashed to defeat; Drake-Korpinen advancing to the semifinals 6-4, 6-3.

In a mirror image of that margain, American pair Wayne Boyd and Ralph Robinson also advanced to the semifinals as they cruised past Andrej Konc and big-serving Belarusian Evgeniy Maximov. With the night session firmly underway, it was the Slovak-Belarusian pair who drew first blood by surging to a 3-0 lead thanks to a break of the Robinson service. But things went sour from there for the eleventh seeds as Konc and then Maximov both dropped service to give the Americans an unexpected path back into the contest. Serving to stay in the set, Konc was unable to prevent the Americans from converting the first of two set points to put one foot in the semifinals. In the second game of the second set, a pair of aces from Maximov helped the eleventh seeds to snap a seven game losing streak, but with the set proceeding on service it was the Belarusian who dropped the all-important game as the Americans showed the form that helped them dispatch the Varga Brothers in the third round. The result from there was elementary as the fourteenth seeds set up a semifinal clash with Drake and Korpinen by way of a 6-3, 6-4 win.
