Davis Relieved

The Daily Dump caught up with renowned tennis crackpot, Heath Davis after his doubles win with Jojo Mustard today.

DD: So Heath, how do you feel today?
Heath: Relieved, to be perfectly honest.
DD: Relieved? Did the Brazilians represent that large an obstacle
Heath: Not as such, but the news this morning suggested that I was on my way to Turin for a challenger tournament after a massive falling out with Jojo. I can categorically state that that isn't the case.
DD: Where did this rumour originate?
Heath: No idea frankly. I never stole his packet of Chocolate Hob-nobs - I just found them saturated with water in the men's locker room. I suspect that Parmentier was nibbling on Jojo's nobs whilst we were on court the other day.
DD: Parmentier? Why him?
Heath: I dunno. He's Belgian?
DD: Okay...

World number 42 Jojo Mustard has made it to the second week of the French Open for the first time after a come-from-behind win against Hungarian János Varga. In an epic four-set slog, Mustard continued his sparkling form which has seen him already defeat fifth seed Darcy Cowan. The CWLand player will put off his grass court aspirations for a week, but found himself troubled early by the Hungarian who took an early break of service. Whilst Mustard managed to draw level at 3-3, he continued to look lacklustre on service as Varga controlled the game with his ability to put some work on the ball. But Mustard regained his confidence in the second set and looked a different player; Varga only just staying the set due to Mustard's inability to capitalise on some three break points. But in a marathon tiebreaker, the CWLand deservedly took the second set to head into the third with all the momentum. The break point chances began to be converted by Mustard as he got the better of Varga in the third set, but the Hungarian fought back valiantly in the fourth. Whilst both players struggled to hold service, it was Mustard who advanced to the second week with a 4-6, 7-6(10), 6-2, 7-6 win. His opponent will be German 21st seed Becker Haas who also produced an upset against twelfth seed Tiago Matias. Haas' straight sets victory sends him into his fourth round clash with Mustard as overwhelming favourite; the German dropping just one set in his first three games.

Another CWLander competing in the fourth round is eighth seed Sven Oxenstierna who survived a massive scare in his third round contest against local hero Jean-Alain Depuis. In front of a massive centre court crowd, the 36-year old's dream was turning into a nightmare as he managed to claim just two games in the first two sets against the very solid Oxenstierna - the CWLander bagelling the Frenchman who had previously defeated 27th seed Morgan Carter. But keen not to embarrass himself in front of a packed stadium, Depuis rallied to pull a rabbit out of his hat and storm back into the contest with an early break in the third - a set he would go on to secure. It was a similar story in the fourth, but whilst Oxenstierna managed to break back he was looking increasingly frustrated as Depuis had the crowd off their feet by prevailing in a thirty shot rally to get the all-important second break of service of the set. Heading to a fifth - with the momentum firmly behind him - Depuis began to tighten up as a determined Oxenstierna fought hard. In the eighth game of the fifth, it was the eighth seed who devastated the crowd by breaking serve and going on to claim a 6-2, 6-0, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 win.

He will not, however, be facing fellow CWLander Randy Smeltz as the 24th seed ended a disappointing clay season with a five-set loss to ninth seed Illya Altman. The Ukrainian played poorly for the majority of the match, but produced a fantastic come-from-behind victory against a confident Smeltz. The ninth seed started very brightly by taking the first set 6-2 against an overawed Smeltz; but the CWLander came flying back into the contest to swoop on the next two sets in just over an hour. But there was another twist in the tale as Altman regained his touch and made Smeltz fight for ever point. His renewed vigour paid off in the fourth as he levelled the match at two sets each; ensuring another five-set slog would occur. In a tight decider, it took until the final game for Altman to get the decisive break to seal a dramatic 6-2, 3-6, 1-6, 6-4 7-5 victory.

Section 1 saw the last of the Frenchmen in the draw fall before the start of the second week as Jason Hall and Henry Charles booked a date for next week. 13th seed Charles ended the brave run of until-recently injured Pierre L'Estrange in straight sets. The Brit broke service just three times, but that was enough for him to prevail in a dull contest 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The Jason Hall-Patrick Pascaul clash was a more exciting contest as the pair traded dominant opening sets. In a match full of powerful baseline tennis, it was Hall who continued his brilliant start to the tournament with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory to advance to the fourth round. The world number one came into the Open with some scratchy form behind him, but seems to have overturned that with some impressive early displays.

Finally, big-serving Norwegian Kim Vollan continues to surprise after upsetting fourteenth seed Davis Kennedy in four sets. In a typically topsy-turvy Vollan match, the unseeded Norwegian fired down twenty-five aces against his Canadian opponent en route to a sensational victory. As one has come to expect, the world number 67 dropped one set 1-6, but played storming tennis for the rest of the match as he continues to excite crowds with his explosive play and all-or-nothing style. His opponent will be American Dwayne Murdoch who was forced to five sets by big-serving Czech Radek Špidla. Had Špidla won, it would have set up a most unlikely fourth round clash considering the surface.

  • Seeded players out: Davis Kennedy; Tiago Matias; Patrick Pascaul; Randy Smeltz; Radek Špidla.

Makeshift pair Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen have won the battle with twelfth seeds Rob Bowenburg and Ninteh Doh to earn a place in the third round of the men's doubles tournament. Bowenburg and Doh got the upper hand against the CWLand pair early with some handy doubles play - the twelfth seeds easily looking the more cohesive pairing both at the net and on service. But Drake, who was obviously frustrated by yesterday's singles exit, lifted the tempo to break service early with a pair of forehand winners; and whilst the favourites broke back, it was the Drake-Korpinen pairing who managed to level the match at a set each. In a wild third set, there were five breaks of service with the underdogs getting the better of Bowenburg-Doh as they sealed a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 upset.

Their opponents in the third round will be Croatia's Nilikar Midid and Brett Read to ensure at least one CWLander will be in the quarterfinals. The big-serving Midid combined brilliantly with Read as the pair snared a 6-3, 6-3 win over the team of Martin Reiter and Adam Schroder. In just over an hour-and-a-half, the favourites produced tennis which was generally better than that of their opponents as they gave the German-Austrian connection the run around from the net. After knocking off seventh seeds Lee Inmin and Qingdong Tsai in the first round, Read and Midid find themselves moving through the tournament as a real threat to the rest of the draw.

Meanwhile, tenth seeds Dênis Rodrigues and Roberto Santos have been defeated in three-sets by China's Gai Kai and Lu Xun. The Brazilians took the first set 6-4, but never looked the same team after as the Chinese pair combined brilliantly to control the play with volleys and smashes galore. The 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win mirrored that of top seeds Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio who were forced to come a set down to defeat Romanian pair Viorel Iftime and Marius Micu. The Romanians were the highest ranked players not to be seeded, and fought well against the Spaniards to claim the first set 6-4. But in a draining contest, the top seeds edged their way back into the contest and, after three hours of competitive tennis, produced the 4-6, 7-6(2), 8-6 win.

  • Seeded players out: Dênis Rodrigues / Roberto Santos.

Alessandria Challenger
Semifinals - Alessandria

Draw

Fourth seed Denis Isaev will face off against local Paolo Scalforo in the final of the Alessandria Challenger this Sunday. The Belarusian produced an upset of sorts to defeat Mario Timko - the man who defeated top seed Fok Zhenyu. The 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win was impressive by the fourth seed, and he will have to produce similar tennis to defeat the local hope Scalforo. The Italian 32-year old, ranked 154th in the world, played brilliantly to defeat third seed Petr Brozik - prevailing 5-7, 7-6(1), 6-3.

  • Seeded players out: Petr Brozik.

Mustard absolutely stoked to make the 4th round. However, I don't think Mustard has beaten Hass, so will be a tough encounter. He'll also need to be on top of his game and convert break points a lot better to reach the quarters.

Alessandria Challenger
Final - Alessandria

Draw

Belarusian Denis Isaev has come from a set down to defeat local hope Pablo Scalforo in three sets in the final of the Alessandria Challenger in Alessandria, Italy. With 55 ranking points and € 4,300 in the offing, it was the Italian 32-year old who got the better of his opponent early with a break of service. Whilst Isaev broke back, he would again be foiled late in the set by an excited Scalforo. The second set, though, was rather different as the 27-year old Isaev began to control the pace of the match with his more expansive range of shots. Whilst the Italian produced some good moments, he was generally overwhelmed as Isaev controlled the game at both the baseline and, sometimes, the net. But Scalforo wouldn't go down without a fight, and in a tight deciding set the pair settled the match in a tiebreaker. But after a brilliant battle for the Alessandria title, it was the fourth seed who prevailed 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(8) to earn a much-desired boost to his rankings.

  • Seeded players out: None.

Sporting Challenger I
Qualifiers - Turin

Draw

CWLand's Vladimir Stakhanov has earned qualification into the main draw of the Sporting Challenger in Turin after a three-set win over Monaco's Olivier Lucas. The new CWLand import played good tennis in his opening two matches; defeating Italy's Maurizio Barbini and New Zealand's Karl King, before drawing himself against the Monaco number two. Whilst Stakhanov played well to take the first set, he faltered badly in the second as he conceded five games on the trot to the world number 272. But in the decider, Stakhanov looked the coolest and calmest, and the early break gave him the confidence to seal a first round matchup with seventh seed Michael De Kinsele tomorrow 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

It wasn't as successful a few days for Randy Banks who, in his first matches for his new country, lost in the second round of qualification. The youngster proved too good first up for local player Alessandro Sarnelli; but only just as he was forced to come from a set down. Banks dropped the first set 4-6, and was in dire straight in the second after finding himself down two match points. But in a tiring tiebreaker, the youngster levelled the match at one set each and went on to clinch it with a clinical third set - 4-6, 7-6(9), 6-1. He wasn't so lucky in the second round, though, as he was smashed by eventual qualifier Miguel Bertolotto - the Argentina going on to claim the match 6-3, 6-4.

  • Qualified: Miguel Bertolotto; Benjamin Hartmann; Marco Masi; Vladimir Stakhanov.

Siemens Open I
Qualifiers - Scheveningen

Draw

In Schevengen, The Netherlands, eighth seed Lawrence Trumper-Smith has continued his impressive end to the clay season by earning direct qualification to the main draw. One of twelve players to be handed a bye first up, Trumper-Smith didn't lose a set in his two matches as he breezed past Vance Stojanovski and then second seed Leander Solent in the playoff final. The CWLander, who earlier this week exited in the first round of the French Open, looked a class above some of his higher ranked opposition and earned him a first round matchup against Andy Russell of Great Britain.

  • Qualified: Eugenio Galindo; Tommy Schaap; Lawrence Trumper-Smith; Gunnar Valsson.

Oh, Stakhanov's heart bleeds for Comrade Banks. Young and full of energy like Stakhanov, but without luck. Stakhanov will advance Banks some money so he can afford good steak and healthy prostitutes.

For the third time in a row, Jamaica's Oneil Stewart has been taken to five sets, and for the third time in a row the world number 35 has prevailed to earn a quarterfinals berth. The athletic 22-year old has been a notorious slow starter this tournament, and his match against sixth seed József Boros seemed to be no different as the Hungarian broke service early as he took the first set 6-3. But as he has done numerous times over the past week, the BMW Open finalist came roaring back into the match with a flurry of powerful strokes and insane returns; the pressure heaped on Boros paying dividends as Stewart got the all-important break of service. But the Hungarian has shown his steel in such circumstances, and he refused to be overwhelmed by the miraculous Jamaican; but even though he managed to stay level with the unseeded Stewart in the fourth, he came up short in the tiebreaker. As the match wore on, Boros attempted to wear an already tiring opponent down as he mixed up his shots - drop shots and deep ground strokes helping him to take the fourth set 7-5. But despite the hours on court he'd been made to suffer through, Stewart's dream run continued into the quarters as he sealed a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3 upset.

His opponent will, unsurprisingly, be tournament favourite Daniel Páez Blanco who had a comparative cakewalk in his showdown with China's Li Wang. Li, who had reversed his poor form from the World Team Cup with some solid first week tennis, found himself completely out of his depth against a man undefeated on clay. In under two hours Blanco managed to warm himself up into a well-oiled machine as he crushed the Chinese 22nd seed to head into a dangerous quarterfinal with Stewart on the back of a 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 drubbing.

The other quarterfinal in the bottom half will take place as predicted, but the packed crowds saw one favourite go perilously close to bowing out in the fourth. Third seed Radivoj Daneu had no such troubles as he claimed a four-set victory over explosive Italian Carlo Amato. Daneu had been written off for this tournament by some pundits after his horror week in Düsseldorf, but the world number three meant business from world go as he looked to curtail the dangerous Amato. He did so in style: despite a lapse of concentration in the second set, the Serb sent an ominous warning to the rest of the draw that he is peaking at the right time. The 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory assures he remains at number three in the world (at the very least).

He'll have a tough opponent in the quarters in Juan Moreno, but it was very nearly a disaster for the Argentinean eleventh seed as he survived a late comeback from unseeded Italian Antonio Bachunelli. Bachunelli, whose brother Sandro will compete in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, dropped the first two sets convincingly against the Madrid finalist, before fighting back valiantly over the next two sets. Whilst he didn't dominate the Argentine, he threw everything he had at him in both power and returning ability; a tactic which paid off as he frustrated the eleventh seed enough to steal a pair of breaks to level the match at two sets a piece. But the tactic had its drawback as Moreno came into the fifth looking fresh against a huffing-and-puffing Bachunelli. In just over twenty minutes, Moreno sealed the fifth and a quarterfinal appearance with a 6-2, 7-5, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1 win.

Sixth seeds Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard have given up a one-set lead to fall in three sets in their third round clash against eleventh seeds Andrej Konc and Evgeniy Maximov. The Slovakian Konc and the Belarusian Maximov started at a snail's pace against the CWLand pair; Davis and Mustard both holding one of their service games to love as they combined well to take the first set 6-1. But the experienced eleventh seeds soon found their footing; the swinging serves of the left-hander Konc proving to be a real difficult for the CWLand returners as the underdogs began to fight their way back into the contest. Davis and Mustard had no answers for the onslaught from their opponents; a short rally at the net between all four competitors finishing the match in favour of Konc and Maximov - the pair advancing 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Elsewhere one quarterfinal was decided as Italian Sandro Bachunelli and Moroccan Hicham Hadir combined to thrash Chinese pairing Gai Kai and Lu Xun, whilst Israelis Tal Cohen and Raz Teper proved just too good for Indian brothers Ashim and Seby Kumar. Whilst the Israelis were made to fight hard for their 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over the pairing who upset Morgan Carter and Wayne Boyd; Bachunelli-Hadir had little trouble in dispatching their opponents 6-1, 6-4.

The match of the day, though, came in the straight sets victory by Belgian pair Mark Harmel and Yves Parmentier against local hopes Pierre L'Estrange and Jean-Alain Depuis. In a tight two set affair, Harmel and Parmentier continued to sound out a dire warning to the rest of the competition as they set up a 6-4, 7-6(5) win. The pair combined brilliantly at the net as they backed up their win over second seeds Morton Blundell and Carlos Machado to book a spot in the quarterfinals as now one of the firm tournament favourites.

Man, That Sux! Was really enjoying the doubles tournament, sux to go out after a convincing first set. Mostly am disappointed for Davis, who has been a great partner, and a waste now that he can't move on to the next tournament.

At least now Mustard can put his sole focus on the singles matches, and will need to against fierce rival Becker Hass.
