Men's Singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4 - Section 5 - Section 6 - Section 7 - Section 8)
Men's Doubles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)

  • In one of the biggest upsets in Grand Slams this season, world No. 10 Illya Altman has been sensationally knocked out in straight sets by CWLand wildcard Scotland Rivers. Rivers, ranked 147 in the world before this week, was in inspired form against a man who had not missed the fourth round of any Grand Slam this season. But the signs were ominous from the start as the talented Rivers took the game right to the tenth seed and managed to break to love in game four of the opening set. Whilst Altman managed to hit back with a classy forehand winner down the line to pull the set back on service, it was Rivers who produced the goods in the tiebreaker to take an unlikely lead. The lead grew as a confident Rivers stormed ahead to a 4-0 lead in the second set as the Ukrainian No. 1 looked utterly powerless to stop the man ranked 137 places lower than him. After dropping the set, though, he showed his trademark resistance to come back from a 2-5 deficit to draw level at 5-5. But keen to avoid another tiebreaker, Rivers stole a break of service from nowhere to secure the most unlikely of victories 7-6(2), 6-2, 7-5. His opponent will be Indian Wells runner up Almen Benaglio who came from a set down to cruise past Romania's Bogdan Maurer.
  • Jojo Mustard's flawless record this week continued with a second straight sets victory; this time a 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 win over world No. 50 Ion Andueza. The Spaniard stuck with Mustard in the first set as the CWLander started slowly again, but found himself quickly worn down by Mustard's proactive game plan in the first match on Centre Court. After taking the first with a late break, Mustard's game flowed more freely and he came up to the net successfully despite the slowish nature of the game. It proved the difference as Andueza seemed reluctant to come off the baseline and allowed Mustard to dictate the points; the 27th seed obliging and wrapping up a straight sets win. He will face his toughest test yet in the third round as Jamaican Oneil Stewart awaits. Stewart backed up his upset of fourth seed Radivoj Daneu in the first round with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 smacking of Niko Ulemek of Croatia.
  • Unfortunately for Spas Delev and Suryakant Singh, their tournaments ended on Thursday as both fell to seeded opponents. Delev failed to capitalise on a good start - taking the first set against twentieth seed Tiago Matias 6-2. But the Portuguese champion recovered for the second match in a row to put in a convincing performance, breaking serve five times as a frustrated Delev struggled to keep his service percentage above 50. Whilst he staged a brief fightback to send the fourth set to a tiebreaker, he ultimately fell to a 6-2, 1-6, 4-6, 6-7(3) defeat at the hands of the Portuguese No. 1. Singh meanwhile tested 28th seed Morgan Carter, but was unable to take his opportunities as he fell to a straight sets loss. After taking his first Grand Slam victory in the first round, Singh pushed the American deep into all three sets but could not bring home the bacon in the important points as Carter advanced 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-4. Carter's victory sees him advance to the third round for the third time this season, but it looks like he could meet his end again with world No. 2 Daniel Páez Blanco awaiting in the fixture.

  • In the match of the day, eighth seed Rasmus Olesen improved his five-set record to 2-2 after an epic affair with Russian No. 1 Dmitry Orlov. After a poor third set tiebreaker, Olesen found himself a set down to the Russian, but recovered well to secure a massive 5-7, 6-3, 6-7(1), 7-6(3), 6-3 victory. He now faces 29th seed Patrick Pascaul in the pick of the third round clashes after the Frenchman slaughtered Austrian Zbiginiew Boniek 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. The only other seed to fall was seventeenth seed Davis Kennedy who fell to Hungary's János Varga; Varga the third of the Hungarians to win on Thursday with a 6-7(5), 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph.

  • Seeded players out:
    Illya Altman;
    Davis Kennedy.
  • In the all-CWLand doubles clash, sixth seeds Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard had little trouble breezing past Randy Smeltz and Randy Banks in a straight sets win on Court 2. The experience of Davis and Mustard saw them dominate the wildcard entrants in the first set with each of the underdogs holding once and being broken once. Whilst the second set was somewhat closer, Davis and Mustard never looked troubled after breaking the Banks service in the fifth game and holding onto their slender lead for an elementary 6-2, 6-4 victory.
  • Meanwhile, third seeds Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen also had little trouble in their straight sets win over Japan's Akihiko Veno and Ninteh Doh. Doh and Veno managed to break the Drake service in the first game, but did nothing to capitalise on their good start as Drake got even with two comprehensive winners to draw level at 1-1. The match continued in the favour of the CWLand pair who combined beautifully to dominate the contest at the baseline and the net en route to a 6-3, 6-3 win. The Montréal champions now face a tough second round contest against Ashim and Seby Kumar after the Indian brothers crushed Russian-Ukrainian pair Valery Belousov and Mykaylo Martynenko 6-4, 6-0.
  • Rob Bowenburg and Jarkko Maxum's career as a doubles duo started successfully as they easily smashed Luxembourg's Nico Hoffman and Israel's Benjamin Rabin in their first round clash. There were some teething problems early as the two obviously lacked some match practice together, but they managed to break the service of their opponents three times in the first set to sneak it 6-4. The fragility of the Hoffman-Rabin service continued into the second set, whilst Bowenburg and Maxum grew in confidence to advance 6-4, 6-1. They face a stiff ask in the second round, though, with ninth seeds Morton Blundell and Carlos Machado awaiting.
  • Eleventh seeds Mark Harmel and Yves Parmentier were the highest ranked seeds to fall as they were beaten in three sets by Viorel Iftime and Marius Micu of Romania. Fourteenth seeds Manfried Manz and Walter Schiller joined them on the loser's list as they fell to Geneva Challenger champions Christophe Norman and Björn Tol. Wimbledon quarterfinalists Ivan Genov and Yordan Zakov last week lead the final in Pickford by a set, but their CW Open campaign ended in three sets at the hands of Belgian-Polish duo Roel Hervelle and Jerzy Kosecki.

  • Seeded players out:
    Mark Harmel &
    Yves Parmentier;
    Manfried Manz &
    Walter Schiller

Well ho-oly ****. Did not expect that at all. Even if Rivers loses to Benaglio (who looks in pretty decent form for one), he still climbs to about 105-110 in the world which is a pretty huge jump. Altman's loss all but guarantees that he falls outside the top ten for the first time since April.

Will have the Challenger second round results up for Deane later. :)

Decent entry from the wildcard. Hope he enjoys the successes that has eluded McNamara in the virtual cricket arena.

Shame about Delev and Singh, but they showed promise. Top 64 not to be sniffed at.

The funniest thing about the Altman exit is that I've always imagined him to be a Davydenko clone. Not to take the shine off the Rivers win or anything...

Well, that's so truly depressing. Doubles in the first round, and singles in the second round. I feel like one of the English woman playing at Wimbledon.

On a another note, I'd like to sign up for any challengers that may be coming up..

Rivers with the most impressive victory of the season there.

Mustard with a flawless performance; could bode well for a good run.

And a good start from Davis/Mustard in the doubles. Excellent day, there.

  • Little know CWLander Marcuss Deane has fallen in the second round of the Zucchetti Kos Tennis Cup in Italy after a three-set loss to Chile's Renato Varas. Deane fired down twenty aces for the match, but it wasn't enough to upstage Varas despite taking the first set. With the first sixteen games going on service without a break point between the players, Varas took his opportunity to break the tall British born player to set up an ultimately set winning lead. The same occurred in the third as the Chilean eighth seed managed to break Deane's service early to produce the goods 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-4.
  • Elsewhere, one time Roland Garros finalist Johan Ortiz looks to have his best chance yet of claiming a title after a 6-2, 6-4 thrashing of local wildcard Andrea Ciano. Ortiz has slumped to 116 in the world on the back of some frustrating early exits, but his job was made easier with news top seed Adem Tadić was beaten in straight sets by Ecuador's Paul Arroyo. Ortiz now faces Argentina's Xavier Suarez in the quarterfinals.

  • Seeded players out: Adem Tadić; Stipo Vučemilović; Victor Zsasz.

  • World No. 6 Sven Oxenstierna has survived a fightback from injury-plagued Serbian Danijel Micic to advance to the fourth round of the CW Open in five sets. Oxenstierna looked in complete control of the match after a dominant second set performance had him two clear of the 25th seed who has been struggling with a calf injury over the past fortnight. But in a dramatic turnaround, Micic managed to fire his way back into the match with some consistent serving and cool nerves as he claimed the third and fourth sets in tiebreakers to head to a deciding fifth. But Oxenstierna has has a record of 3-0 in five set matches, and produced his best tennis in the face of an upset as he raced through the fifth in just twenty-five minutes to complete an escape act 7-5, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-7(1), 6-2 in three hours and 41 minutes.
  • It will be an all-CWLand grudge match in the second section as Jefferson Drake survived his biggest test yet in another five-set affair; this time against Chinese teenager Zhijun Sun. The out-of-form Zhijun took the first set in impressive fashion, but Drake hit back to take the next two sets, and it looked like business as usual for the in form twelfth seed as he let loose with eighteen winners against the shellshocked Zhijun. But a brief loss in concentration saw Drake give up a 40-15 lead to allow Zhijun his third break of the match; a break of service that allowed the 21st seed an avenue back into the match. But in the deciding fifth set, the super-fit Drake had the crowd willing him on, and after exchanging breaks with his opponent managed to finally pull free 5-3 to secure a massive 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win.
  • The dark horse of the top half seems to be eighteenth seed Randy Smeltz who has yet to drop a set this week after peeling off another straight sets victory - this time over hot-and-cold Italian Carlo Amato. Just a fortnight after his straight sets shock of world No. 1 Jason Hall, Amato managed to take an early minibreak in the first set tiebreaker against his fellow Clowich quarterfinalist. But Smeltz rallied to take the breaker 7-5 and from there it was pretty much over from the Italian who failed to take control of his emotions. Whilst Smeltz produced just nine unforced errors for the match, Amato let fly with thirty-five in an undisciplined display against the always steady Smeltz. Smeltz's 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-1 victory marks his first fourth round appearance at a Grand Slam, but he'll have to overcome world No. 3 Radek Špidlá who also has not dropped a set this week.
  • Finally, the recent form of Heath Davis came to a screeching halt as he was dispatched in straight sets by world No. 1 Jason Hall. Hall's form is ominous, and he handled the explosive Pickford champion comfortably on Centre Court. Davis managed to slide in 17 aces against the world No. 1, but his service was not as consistent as usual as Hall took advantage of some lacklustre second serves which seemed to land in his 'honey hole' ((c) Roger Rasheed) without fail. In one hour and 37 minutes, the tournament favourite advanced to an all-American fourth round clash.
  • In the upset of the day, Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan was beaten in five sets by Bulgaria's Ivan Genov. Cowan had been given perhaps the toughest draw of all the top eight seeds, and had so far made it through unscathed. But the tenacious Genov overturned his abysmal recent form to come back from two dirty sets to secure a 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 boilover. He will face American nineteenth seed Rick Henson after he accounted for compatriot Hugh James 6-0, 7-6(5), 6-3. In the first section, either Jason Hall or Dwayne Murdoch will become the only player to make a quarterfinal at every Grand Slam this year after their third round wins.

  • Seeded players out:
    Carlo Amato;
    Darcy Cowan;
    Danijel Micic;
    Zhijun Sun
  • Sixth seeds Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard were forced to come from a set down to defeat CWLand-Macedonian duo Jamee Hancianu & Gjorgji Dinov. The underdogs stunned Davis and Mustard who, in their third individuals games in two days, took a while to get out of the blocks after a classy lob from Dinov looped over the sixth seeds at the net to earn a break in game six of the set. The wildcard entrants clung onto their lead; Hancianu sealing the set with a comfortable smash following a sharp serve down the T from Dinov. But the favourites woke up to take the second set in 28 minutes 6-1, before facing a renewed fightback from the central European pairing in the decider. However the sixth seeds narrowly avoided defeat with a break to love; advancing 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to the third round.
  • A fair crowd turned out to the Grandstand Court to witness new hero Scotland Rivers in action, but he and veteran partner Vladimir Gryzlov could not get the job done as they fell in three to seventh seeds Tal Cohen & Raz Teper. The quick work of the Israelis as the net helped them to three breaks of service, before they were shocked in the second by their opponents who broke in the very first game following a perfect passing shot from the 40-year old Gryzlov from outside the doubles court. But the second set seemed an anomoly, and the Roland Garros finalists saved their best to last as they continue to arrest poor form with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
  • The biggest names to fall were eighth seeds Ion Andueza & Sanchez Emelio who gave up a one-set lead against Austrian brothers Jurgen & Zbiginiew Boniek. The Bonieks dropped the first set 3-6, before coming back to secure a 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 upset. Fifth seeds Andrej Konc & Evgeniy Maximov remain the danger team as the Montréal and Clowich runners up cruised past Benjamin Hartmann & Mischa Pasveer 6-1, 6-4.

  • Seeded players out:
    Ion Andueza &
    Sanchez Emelio.
