But it's not a shade on Mohinder Amarnath. Therefore, I declare Amarnath the best ever batsman against the West Indian quartet & lo did he suffer in the return series -- 1 run in six innings!!!!
Sure.

Mohinder was the best player of fast bowling of that age. Lloyd and all other West indians considered him the best player of fast bowling in the world. A few days ago there was a programme on ESPN or Starsports and everyone, Greenidge, Richards, Lloyd etc said he was the best player of fast bowling they saw in their careers.

He also played Imran the best amongst Indian batsmen in two series when most others floundered.

On his pathetic one run in 6 innings or something, it wasnt the fast bowling that was causing the problem. Mohinder developed a big flaw in his technique. He had developed a completely square on stance to play the Windies short pitched bowling when touring there to counter the bouncers (not as much as Chandrapaul but very pronounced)

When he came back to India to play them at home. They discovered that standing so square chested made it difficult for him to reach outside the off stump with his left foot. So while his bat went to the ball, the left foot , was barely going upto the off stump. This left a big gap between bat and pad and he became susceptible to the in coming ball from outside the off stump.

He was repeatedly bowled by pitched up in cutters from outside the off stump noyt any great express fast bowling.

By the time he realised this he had scored just one run in about six or so consecutive innings and then was out of the side for a very long time. I have always felt he should have been dropped earlier in that series and should have gone back to the nets instead of continuing and looking terrible with every successive failure.

He came back with a bang as he always did but had missed many matches in between.

Ok the next round will be very predictable I am guessing so we will pick batsman Number 3 and 4 at the same time.
I'm slightly concerned that some of you can't count to 4. :p

Bradman and Lara for me.

Gee this is tough. Granted that Bradman is a cert but after that how do you fit the likes of Viv, Lara, Sachin, Pollock, Hammond and co into 2 spots?

3. Bradman
4. Richards
5. Lara

I follow a simple system. Other than Hobbs, Bradman, Sobers and SF Barnes, I vote for different people every time this sxcercise comes up and it does once a quarter or so :p

Trumper, Hutton, Barry Richards, Sutcliffe, Gavaskar as openers.

Headley, Hammond, Viv Richards, Tendulkar, Lara, Ranji, Compton, Weekes, Worrell etc for middle order

Evans, Oldfield, Taylor, Ames, Knott etc for keeper

Miller, Imran, Hadlee, Marshall as bowling all rounders

Lillee, Lindwall, Larwood, Trueman, Roberts, Holding etc as fast bowlers

Grimmett, Orielly, Laker, Verity as spinners

You always get a good team :)

How does it matter. They are all great players. How can we really evaluate one against the other ? You can support any one of them and if you know your cricket find enough to support your case. :)

Simple :p

Bradman and Richards for me, at 3 and 4. Chappell would go in at 5 for me. (though of course, we're not voting for 5 yet :p)

LOL. Good idea. In the end i narrowed it down to Viv, Sachin and Lara as their the ones ive seen. I had to have a lefty in their so that put Lara in and Sachin has been voted for more than Viv so i went for Viv to even it up abit. Not the most analytical system but like yours it got the job done! :D

I propose the next time something like this comes up we just name a 30-man All-time squad. That would also make it easier. :)

Here are some earlier threads.

1. This gave a number of different all time teams to chose from

2. This was a fun thread for the worst team

3. This was another excercise similar to what is being done now except taht I had given a list of players to chose from.

Whatever it takes!!!
Bradman
Sachin
Lara

And yes, I think Sachin and Lara would compare favourably with most of the past greats. And because in MY dream team, they will always be there and bat next to each other. I have always wanted to see the two bat together in some match.

They did once. Partnership of 120 I think.

really? When was it? I want details.
The last time India played in the Sahara Cup IIRC. It was a joint India-WI team vs Pakistan in an exhibition/charity OD game in Toronto. I missed watching the game unfortunately :( .

lol...good luck with that. And to think that after the stupendous 'success' of this years Super series, there might never be another occasion for the two to bat together again..

Bradman has 26 votes

The number 4 position is still open although Tendulkar has all but gained selection here.

The two contenders left - Tendulkar with 12 votes and Richards with 7.

Still about 6 hours left of voting so if there are enough Richards fans out there he could still steal it.
