But you'd have to admit that they didnt stop most of the shots that are routinely considered blockable today.
Oh, no doubt.

What I'm unsure about is whether not having to score against defensive field placings has any bearing on your technique.

Stewart, just think he deserved a vote, because his keeping was much under-rated, in my opinion.

First class cricket was well established by the 20s and 30s and while there were some aspects that belong to antiquity,
I disagree with that and the rest. We can either agree to disagree or lets discuss this on another thread as i am reluctant to take this thread too much into Off Topic.

Sorry about the delay (My dog got trapped up in the forrest for 5 hours under a huge pile of logs that had been put there from the trees they cut down)

Anyway Gilly wins it easily.

Richard Hadlee for me btw. One of the greatest ever fast bowlers (plus he is a kiwi) who thought up plans to get wickets better than anyone. Also lead us to a series victory in Aus which only 3 countries have ever done so that is a pretty big achievement for a country like NZ. Paddles is the man.

Handy with the willow as well.

Okay well, my view is that number 8 should have a bowler who is a good batsman. Warne would, in an all-time XI sense, be naturally a number 9 for me, as would someone like Marshall, so I'll go for a better batsman.

So, I'll go for Richard Hadlee.

His batting was useful, certainly good enough to bat at 8 after that lineup, and I consider him extremely close to, and perhaps -the-, greatest seamer of all time.

Three specialist bowlers to come. :)

Choosing the final four will be extremely tough. Here's how I would break it down.
Keep in mind, at this point the most important criterion is bowling prowess, with batting abilities only serving as an additional bonus.
First let's take a look at the initial contenders for selection.

You've got the two spin masters: Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan.
Then you've got five superb all-rounders: Imran Khan, Ian Botham, Kapil Dev, Richard Hadlee and Keith Miller.
Finally, you've got a formidable list of pacemen: Alan Davidson, Clarrie Grimmett, Dennis Lillee, Ray Lindwall, Glenn McGrath, Sydney Barnes, Jim Laker, Fred Trueman, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Alan Donald, Curtly Ambrose, Joel Garner, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts and Courtney Walsh.

Here are my four: Glenn McGrath, Richard Hadlee/Imran Khan, Malcolm Marshall, Muttiah Muralitharan/Shane Warne.

I would slightly prefer Hadlee over Imran because of his superior bowling. Also, I would slightly prefer Muralitharan over Warne because he is superior in every statistic apart from # of wickets, which is simply because Warne is older. Now, getting back to the task at hand. For the #8 spot, I nominate Richard Hadlee.

I think this is going to get confusing with lots of votes split among different positions.

Anyway my pick is Imran Khan: IMO the best of the four 80's all-rounders and perhaps the greatest bowling all-rounder ever. He would be close to getting the nod for his bowling alone anyway. What about Hadlee? I would pick him at 9.
