I basically coined the term to describe Anderson - good enough and accomplished enough to be acknowledged but a rung down from the very best due to some shortcomings.

Going by tier lists an ATVG is tier 2, while ATG is tier 1 or S tier. S tier is really reserved for one or maybe two players in the world at any one time. Smith, McGrath, Gilchrist, Murali, Warne, Tendulkar, Lara, Marshall, Hadlee, Garner, Richards and Lillee are pretty much the only S tier players since the 70s in tests.
Hilarious omission of indisputably the best opener in this period, maybe ever.

Was randomly looking for Neesham's CW account and the first post I see is him saying Jade Dernbach carries on like a **** everytime he plays.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

The signs were definitely there early on.

as someone who works in comms, Neesham has easily the best social media profile of any cricketer and it’s no surprise he has sometimes worked in comms himself.

Kumble and Dev are probably the perfect ATVG examples actually. Don't think they'd even make ATG 3rd or 4th or 5th XIs (especially depending on which XI Kallis makes, for Dev).
They were clearly very good players, greats for their country and definitely in contention for their own country's AT XI, among the best of their time (but no one would claim they were the very best of their time either - definitely at the bottom rung of that), and thus nowhere close to ATG status.

Jimmy Anderson is maybe another, but that would definitely need a thread or two or five.
Kapil is certainly an ATG (though not on bowling alone). One of those cricketers whom stats do little justice. Played with little or no support for most of his career. Make him bowl alongside Bumrah and Shami, and you see those stats improve.

Agree with Kumble and Anderson though.

Tests?
Dev is an ODI ATG, not a test ATG IMO even if the stats are against him because of the lack of support (though I do agree he'd have done very well bowling with Bumrah and Shami and probably averaged closer to 25-27ish).
That said, in an ATG test XI you can stack a team up with bowlers (and there are plenty of those, so Dev would never get in even with a theoretical ~25 average), and have a batsman be an all-rounder/part time bowler.

Possibly being cheeky there.

It is a common knowledge here though, that TJB(arguably) and Stephen do not rate Gavaskar much. Never mind that he scored bucket full of runs in that kind of an era.
I can't recall having ever made a comment on Gavaskar's existence one way or the other, except probably re. the racism scandal

Its common knowledge that TJB doesnt care or discuss much about cricket before the 90s
