Cricket Book Inquiry

Cricket Spectator
Hello,

I am an American who is fascinated with cricket (specifically, the first-class/test version of the game). I had an inquiry on cricket books and was hoping someone could help me out.

I was wondering if someone had any recommendations on books that touch upon the nuances, drama, subtleties, and inherent details of the sport.

Several people have told me to read “The Meaning of Cricket” by Jon Hotten. Are there are any other books like this that I should add to my reading list?

Please let me know. I’d appreciate the assistance.

Cheers,
Chris

If you’re particularly interested in longer form cricket, then something like Great Days in Test Cricket is good, light read. Like a series of short stories about each of the days. most of the days with some historic significance to the sport.

For cricket’s place in broader society and history, CLR James’ Beyond A Boundary gives an excellent West Indian perspective. Plus James was a leftie, so if you read it and tell us you enjoyed it, the libertarian cabal will become even more convinced that creeping socialism is taking over.

The Picador Book of Cricket (edited by Ramichandra Guha) will take you chronologically thru the history of tests and the main characters that played the game. Excellent writing from each era.
