Conditions dependent Players

Colin De Grandhomme looks like a world beater when it swings in NZ. That debut 6fa.

Not every player can be McGrath or Tendulkar and that's fine. You'd certainly take Shah over Lyon in certain conditions and vice versa. Still takes skill to exploit what's on offer etc etc.

Yeah Colin's bowling is a good one. Conditions are effectively the difference between him being a dangerous frontline bowler and a part-time relief bowler.

Keep in mind folks that cricket is a conditions dependent sport.
Some players are much more "dependent" on them than others though, hence the thread

Discussing which bowlers are/were least conditions-dependent might be an interesting exercise actually. Probably most spinners to some extent you would say depend on turning wickets. Exception I can think of maybe Vettori and Nathan Lyon? Ashwin is improving. Even Warne and Murali were trash in India and Australia respectively.

Mominul is a massive home track bully, but he'd still be in the ATG Bangladesh team. Think his average outside the subcontinent is under 23. Outside Bangladesh barely higher.

Vettori and Nathan Lyon?
They're like 6 to 7.5/10 ~most~ of the time regardless of conditions. A guy like Herath will win you way more matches in helpful conditions and that's arguably preferable in a real world scenario IMO.

Oh definitely. I'm not saying that Vettori or Lyon are better than Ashwin, Jadeja, or Herath by any means. Just that they have a more consistent standard of performances across different conditions.

I actually think Vettori was relatively conditions-dependent, at least in term of actually being threatening. He built pressure well enough otherwise, but he actually averaged 37 at home (and 40 in Australia, 64 in South Africa, compared to 28 in Asia).

Lyon's a good example though. If anything I think Australia would probably trade some of his ability to be solid on non-turning tracks for a few more big hauls in the fourth innings and in Asia tbh.

I think he already has the Asia thing locked down in his skillset atm but he just hasn't had the chance to showcase it very often ever since it took a turn starting with the 2017 BG in India.

He did very well in that series and against Bangladesh in the series that followed immediately after.

Since then he's only played one two test series against Pakistan in the UAE and nothing else in Asia at all.

Sehwag is a walking wicket against anything that bounces above the waist level and moves laterally either in air or off the pitch.
