One that I thought may work would be an IPL-style auction. Every player has the same amount of cash and submits a silent bid for so many players in an auction round.

11 rounds in total (each maybe with similar players to ensure squad balance?)
Yeah, I stumbled across a similar one on a completely random forum I've never found since. Looked quite interesting.

Would involve some serious organising from someone.

Someone remind me about it when I get back from Australia and I'll get it going.

When do you go away? I wouldn't mind organising it but would obviously want you to be involved as it's your idea.
So depends whether it's a matter of not enough time before you leave? Or too much going on before you leave?

I like the alphabet draft idea Blakus.

It's a bit disappointing seeing 4 people now vote for themselves. I'm pretty much counting them as minnow votes, and excluding there votes, lol - Nah just would find it a little more interesting to see who they actually thought was the best team after there's.

Have mentioned that I like the variety in that batting line up.. Seems like we get a solid one for every aggressive one there.. Bowling attack is good too with a lot of match winners there and the solid Vaas providing back up along with Kallis. Would have thought he would pick a leggie more than an offie though.. As he already has two decent offies and a very occassional offie there with De Silva, Sehwag and KP...
Yeah I agree, I would have loved a leg spinner, I actually picked Saqlain quite early though.

Saturday through to 9th January.

This sort of thing would require a bit more time and planning to run properly IMO, so would put a few rules etc. in place before launching it.

Yeah fair enough, enjoy your time away :)
Looking forward to you getting back :p

I voted for Matt's team. Almost went with Blakus but the lack of a specialist spinner IMO would be telling on pitches requiring quality slow bowlers. I also considered Nufan's side.

Bit surprised my team hasn't had a vote but I get the impression including de Villiers as wicket keeper and a host of players not associated with the 1990s era has counted against me somewhat. I still think my side would be lethal in a simulation though. ;)

Don't worry Somerset, my team is receiving no love at the moment either, despite having 3 of the best quicks from the last 20 years

Maybe I can convince SS to vote for me :p

Marc's team for mine, good all round batting and excellent bowlers, some who will fire you out and others who will work you over. Also a very dependable wicketkeeper.

Gone with Matt's in the end. Super bowling options and great depth with Streak coming in at #9.

Plus he was classy enough not to vote for himself.

Thanks to saggers & vic for the votes, btw. Cheques are in the post.

Matt had a very good draw the first round and a very good draw in the final two rounds. He made very good use of those positions. His team is definately one of the top contenders IMO. My vote I think will go to either him, bunny or NUFAN. Still making up my mind as to which.

My team would beat all of them in a canter though

'tis true.
Picking up Akram was a huge boon.

In retrospect I probably should have gone for a fourth bowler around round 6 or 7 and picked up two world class bats in rounds 10 and 11 instead of waiting for a bowler and ending up with Steyn.

I was pretty certain pretty early that I'd go for a bowler and a batsman in 10 and 11, regardless of where I came out. The 'worst' case for me would have been being drawn around 5/6 and therefore not having a pick in the first four in either round, as I was pretty certain there'd be an unseemly rush for the bowlers. Given I had Flower and Flintoff, I had a lot of flexibility, if I ended up with two batsmen it would be ok, if I ended up with a second spinner, that would be ok, but it panned out that I was able to get my second choice bowler from the 90s team (would have taken Ambrose if I could) and a decent batsman in 00s. Would point out that securing that flexibility required me to forego the opportunity to obtain the best specialists within the first 20 picks - I could have taken a Walsh or Sehwag with pick 1 and rolled the dice that I'd be able to sort out the keeper and team balance issue later.

Went with the Brumby's team he seems to know what he is talking/writing about
lol

Surely the cheque must have arrived in the mail :p

His fourth bowler averaged just over 1 wpm. Admittedly he got the worst possible draft position but still his team is pretty much reliant on posting massive scores and hoping the opponents become demoralised.

So the time has come for me to make a decision. To do this I think I'm going to rank each side on the basis of a few key metrics.

Top order (bats 1-3), middle order (bats 4-6), tail batting strength (7-11), fast bowling attack, spin bowling attack, wicket keeper, 5th bowling option and balance.

Please take all this with a grain of salt as it's all my opinion only and I may feel differently tomorrow.

So in the end, according to my ranking system I end up as the highest ranked. But as I will not vote for myself, NUFAN gets my vote. The final team rankings came down to a combination of the bowling and batting rankings, with team balance playing a key but lesser role in deciding the final order. Any ties went to the side with the better batting and bowling and any ties (there was one) went to the best keeping. All in all, I'd say that the standard in this was so high that even if you came in the bottom three, there really was not much in it. My ranking system punished people without a spinner a LOT.
