murali getting his 800th off his final ball was pretty neat

Agreed. It was the ideal way to retire from tests and the perfect way to finish the game, although it was a fairly unremarkable test otherwise.

Greg Chappell needing 68 runs to go past Bradman in his final innings, got there with ease making 180 odd which gave him a ton in his first test, first test as captain and last test. Also set the then record for catches taken in tests by grabbing a few.

Nasser Hussain springs immediately to mind, in the first test against NZ in 2004.

Lots of people were questioning whether he shoudl still be in the side, especially when Strauss, on debut as a replacement for the temporarily injured Vaughan, made a ton in the first innings and 80odd in the 2nd.

England had to make around 300 in the 4th innings to win the game, and weren't looking good when Tres and Butcher went early. Cue a large partnership between Hussain and Strauss which almost saw us home until our hero ran out Strauss. No problem though, Nasser stayed to the end and brought up the win and his 100 with three consecutive boundaries.

After which he announced he was standing down to make way for the Strauss as Vaughan was expected to return in the next test.

Others ......

Flintoff and Harmison in the final test of the 2009 Ashes. Fred bringing about the crucial run-out of Ponting, and Harmy taking out the tail to just about seal the win.

And I suppose we have to mention Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist, Hayden and Langer at the end of the whitewash in 2007.

Although Gilly went on after that.

Gilchrist and Hayden played on after that.

Imran had a good end to his career. Led his side to victory against Lankans in his last series and made 90 odd not out in one of the tests and drew second last series against the great Windies and contributed with both bat and ball.

Clarrie Grimmett took 33 wickets in his last three Tests, 13 in the final one.

Though they should never actually have been his last three Tests.

Don't know if you can do much better than that as a bowler, there haven't been any hat-tricks on retirement have there?
