The Shami vs Philander battle was pretty lopsided in favor of the latter, but I feel they are different bowlers in many ways.

This battle looks at four bowlers with somewhat similar roles as enforcers who, while not primary strike bowlers, meant to put sustained pressure on the batsmen. They all average in the 27 range so I think this comparison would be interesting. Morkel has the bounce/height/pace factor, Shami has his reverse and Broad has spells of pure destruction. What would be your pecking order?

Broad
Shami
Morkel

imo. I'm not a massive fan of longevity as a huge determinant but in this case Broad's has just shaded this for him ahead of Shami, who I really rate as well. I feel Morkel was more of a Brett Lee type in that he was pretty sporadic in terms of putting it all together for most of his career. I cbf doing a stats-based look at the three of them though, I've just ranked them this way after about 10 seconds' thought.

If Broad and Shami had played the same amount of tests/ time, I would have Shami ahead of him.

Are Shami and Broad really enforcers worth consideration here? They can do short pitched bowling now and then but enforcers as their main role?

To me they're mainly conventional swing/seam bowlers, and Shami has a bit more pace than Broad.

I don’t even think of Morkel as an enforcer... more a third seamer that struggled to pitch it up most of his career.

Yeah Morkel is not an enforcer, would be a bit revisionist to say so. Just a very good first change bowler.

are there any genuine enforcers kicking around at the moment? tbh i can't remember one in recent memory (last five or so years)

like even the morkels of the world etc, guys known for being able to bang it in, are still talked about higher as bowlers for times they pitched the thing up

yeah he was **** at it.

in around 2009 he pitched the ball up and got poles. i think it was around the time of that absolute meme "would broad make india all time XI?" thread.
Nah that thread came later…like 2011, which is what made it so ridiculous. He of course put it to bed with an MOTS effort against India
