12th Man - Lance Gibbs o (replaces either Cairns or Broad if the wicket is a spinners' wicket)

Happy with this line-up. A solid top 3 followed by talented stroke makers in the middle order. All round talent with century makers down to #10 ... in all this team has accumulated 109 test centuries.
Four bowlers to share the new ball with a talented spinner in support. Samaraweera offers another spin option with Gibbs an excellent option if the wicket dictates. Collectively the bowlers have 90 five wickets in an innings hauls.

Why not just go with a 6-1-4 setup, with Cameron at 7 Lindwall at 8 and Prasanna in place of Mushtaq Mohammed? The bowling instantly becomes better and you don't need the extra batting with KP at 6.

Eh. This is kind of the 3 specialist bowlers + two bowling ARs setup (+ Mushtaq), considering the amount of overs Goddard and Mankad are used to bowling. 3 of the specialists bats are decent part-timers as well.

The batting order is a bit deceptive; this looks more reasonable:

1) Kane Williamson /
2) Martin Crowe /
3) Peter May /
4) Kevin Pietersen /
5) Mushtaq Mohammad / o
6) Jock Cameron / +
7) Trevor Goddard o /
8) Vinoo Mankad o /
9) Ray Lindwall o
10) Shoaib Akhtar o
11) Alec Bedser o

If you ignore the openers (as Goddard and Mankad generally open), this looks fairly reasonable.

12th man: Sonny Ramadhin OB 158 @ 28.98

Relatively pleased with that. Snagging AB de V early doors possibly my masterstroke. Having a genuine keeper/batsman does balance an XI.

There's a pleasing depth to the batting, with a bloke with a test century in Anil Kumble coming in as low as 10, and some proper rapidity available in Rhino and the Typhoon with two of the best fast medium seamers of this century to complement them. Holder has his height to discomfort the batter and big Vern could make it nibble on glass.

Then there's Kumble to block up an end and twirl (slighty) away all day with Sanath's SLA stuff if it takes turn later on.

Sonny could come in for one of the seamers on bunsens.

12th man: Shahid Afridi - on a rank turner Afridi comes in for one of the seamers, given Fazal Mahmood's record in Asia probably Afridi for one of Larwood/Bond depending on form.

Pretty happy with this side, in hindsight I might have picked Lillee over O'Reilly and then gone for Tayfield as expected some of the lead spinners to be picked earlier then they were. But nonetheless a solid seam attack with one of England's best ever seamers in Larwood along with one of New Zealand's best ever in Bond who adds real pace to the attack too. Fazal Mahmood with a very good record too especially in Asian conditions. I thnk Mathews is underrated as a bowler too so I am happy to have him as a 5th bowling option who can keep things tight on flatter pitches or if there is a bit of movement around he will come into the attack whilst the ball is still newish to give him a chance to make a key inroad or 2. Also have probably the best spinner available in O'Reilly to accompany the seamers and wreak havoc if the pitch takes turn.

However, think the strength is the batting - two ATG opening batsman in Morris and Greenidge. Ian Chappell averages over 53 in 49 innings when he has batted at 3 as captain. Dudley Nourse an ATG and Abbas averages over 50 at 5 although most of his big innings there have come in Pakistan admittedly.

Angelo Mathews and Quinton de Kock give us superb batting down at 6 and 7 and think such a strong top 7 covers for a weaker tail although Larwood pretty handy at 8.
