Should Indian cricket be banned !
One hears this outcry nowadays on various cricket chat forums around the world - "Ban India". Is that merely an over-the-top reaction?
Of course it would be a silly response to ban India but one can see the underlying sentiment where that cry is coming from. It is similar to ban cricket, throw all cops/politicians in jail type of anguished cry one hears sometimes in India. Instead of ridiculing this exaggerated expression of disgust we, the Indian cricket fans need to appreciate that there is anguish in other parts of the world as well. The fact that it is India whose name is involved doesn't make this hyper-response any more outlandish as when many, including large number of us Indians, were talking similarly about Pakistan.
Yes banning India is not a serious solution even BUT it is an indicator of how much the acts of omission and commission of those involved with the running of the game in India, those on the periphery and those who might act as some kind of regulatory influences on the former. It is disgusting what is happening in India and we should not expect much sympathy.
So what can the international cricket bodies do more realistically. Quite a few things actually.
First and foremost they have to call BCCI's bluff. BCCI has behaved as a bully at the international stage because it has come to take its financial clout as a "Brahmastra" in the face of the cricketing world's opinions contrary to its own. But ICC needs to remember that bullying does not end till a bully's bluff is called.
If the world cricket appears to be a financial lame duck (one can argue that premise as well), Indian cricket can not make zillions in isolation. We will lose all fan following, thereby the TRP's, thereby the ads and sponsors and thereby our financial clout if we had no official international engagements. You can try (and struggle) to sustain the game as South Africa did during its isolation but the real growth of the game did not take place in South Africa till their isolation ended. This inspite of their continuing to produce world class cricketers as well as the contacts with international cricket through rebel tours which included players of considerable merit.
So even before banning, the threat of possible banning/isolation/sanctions-if-you-please is not something that should not even be hinted at by those countries which genuinely feel this problem is likely to engulf the game and damage it irreparably.
It may also be possible to cut off links with, say, the IPL for a period of time decided upon preconditions which ICC/other interested countries can think of. If cricketers were faced with a choice between official international cricket and first class game and the IPL, let them make a choice. There will be legal implications in each country but a united effort by various cricketing nations can and should produce results.
ICC can make changes in its constitution setting down guidelines for cricketing bodies to be eligible for membership or at least for holding elected offices in the ICC. Again I am not a legal person but I am sure ways and means can be found to block bodies which lack transparency in operation/finances, where democratic norms are given the go-by in electing office bearers, where office bearers do not have to be professionals or paid/remunerated and completely devoid of accountability and so on. Again, legal means can be found to achieve some/all of these/similar targets.
Of course BCCI will say "Go to hell" but then they expose themselves further to ridicule amongst the Indian public as well assuming, of course, that the Indian media does not pounce on the ICC as meddling with India's internal affairs !
The conspiracy of silence has been one of the most startling and disappointing aspects of the current fiasco about the game's "mis"management in India and ICC's Buddha like stance so far is not the least of these silences.
ICC needs to speak for once and take sides with the game and the paying public.
