Ashes Draft

Only Shri left to pick. Very surprised that a couple of top batsmen haven't been selected but seems like the focus has been on bowlers.

kingkallis

International Coach
Yes, this proves that England and Australia has produced finest of the batsman around the globe.

Almost 70% top picks ( ATGs or semi ATGs :p ) were batsman hence people had to pick bowlers in their 12th round.

Come on Shri. Make a pick!

Once that's done I'll ask everyone to post up their final teams so I can get a vote going.

Late-Night Coffee XI

1. Andrew Stoddart - 996 runs at 35.57, 3 centuries
2. Mark Taylor - 7525 runs at 43.49, 19 centuries
3. Ricky Ponting - 12320 runs at 54.27, 39 centuries
4. David Gower - 8231 runs at 44.25, 18 centuries
5. Basil D'Olivera - 2484 runs at 40.06, 5 centuries
6. Warwick Armstrong - 2863 runs at 38.68, 6 centuries; 87 wickets at 33.59, 3 5w hauls
7. Richie Benaud (c) - 2201 runs at 24.45, 3 centuries; 248 wickets at 27.03, 16 5w hauls
8. Gubby Allen (o) - 750 runs at 24.19, 1 century; 81 wickets at 29.37, 5 5w hauls
9. Godfrey Evans (wk) - 2439 runs at 20.49, 2 centuries, 173 catches, 46 stumpings
10. Derek Underwood - 297 wickets at 25.83, 17 5w hauls.
11. Fred Spofforth (o) - 94 wickets at 18.41, 7 5w hauls.

12. Gilbert Jessop - 26698 FC runs at 32.63, 873 FC wickets at 22.79 (18 Tests)

Strengths:
- Ponting, Gower, D'Olivera makes for a quality middle order that's great to watch
- Three all-rounders gives plenty of both bowling options and batting depth
- Great spin bowling with Underwood & Benaud
- Purists' gloveman Evans to work with them
- Thorough tactical pedigree with 7 (count 'em, 7) Ashes captains

Weaknesses:
- Fast bowling has guile but lacks real firepower
- Armstrong as third seamer could be questionable on unhelpful wickets
- Openers are good but forgettable at this level
Awesome Team. Remarkably similar to mine in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

1. Shane Watson - 1703 runs @ 41.53, 42 wickets @ 30.19
2. Dennis Amiss - 3612 runs @ 46.30
3. K.S. Ranjitsinhji - 989 runs @ 44.95 (24692 FC runs @ 56.37)
4. Steve Waugh - 10927 runs @ 51.06(C)
5. Micheal Clarke - 4640 runs @ 48.33
6. Jack Gregory - 1146 runs @ 36.96, 85 wickets @ 31.15
7. Billy Bates - 656 runs @ 27.33, 50 wickets @ 16.42 (10249 FC runs @ 21.57, 874 wickets @ 17.13)
8. Rod Marsh - 3633 runs @ 26.51, 343 catches, 12 st
9. Harold Larwood - 1427 FC wickets @ 17.51, 7290 FC runs @ 19.91
10. Tony Lock - 174 wickets @ 25.58, 742 runs @ 13.74
11. Frank Tyson - 76 wickets @ 18.56, 230 runs @ 10.95 (767 FC wickets @ 20.89)

12th man - Albert Trott - 228 runs @ 38

Strengths:
- Very good middle order
- Three all-rounders gives plenty of both bowling options and batting depth
- Great opening bowling attack(particularly in the historic context of the Ashes) with Larwood and Tyson
- One of the best ever keepers
- Three extremely fast bowlers in Gregory, Larwood and Tyson

Weaknesses:
- No outstanding captain
- Openers are good but forgettable at this level
- Bowling attack contains three fast bowlers who were prodigious when they played but none of them went on to have long, glorious ATG careers.

Cheers Teja.

Is it possible to move on without Shri, for now? It's been his pick for over three days. It's only the 12th pick he's missing so we could post the teams now and perhaps edit his when he picks?

Good idea

Fred's Fertangs are

1. Michael Atherton
There to blunt the opening attack. No back problems for him in my side so much better than his 37.85 overall would suggest
2. Victor Trumper
Australia's greatest of the Golden Age
3.Walter Read
Averaged over 27 at the dawn of time - would be worth many more on modern wickets
4. Stan McCabe
Useful medium pacer bowler but here as a batsman, and one of the all time greats as well.
5. Tom Graveney
Out of favour with the selectors in what should have been his prime but still averaged 44 from 79 Tests
6. Tony Greig
Fearless, uncompromising - averaged 40 with the bat and 32 with ball - Lillee and Thomson? - powder puff bowling to Greig
7. Bert Oldfield
Best 'keeper ever? His haul of Test stumpings is still the best 70 years on
8. Shane Warne
Finest leg spinner the game has produced
9. Jim Laker
Finest off spinner the game has produced
10. Fred Trueman
Finest fast bowler the game has produced? Possibly not quite but I wouldn't break the news to him
11. Geoff Lawson
180 Test wickets at 30 - strike rate of 61 and 11 five wicket hauls demonstrate he was a fine bowler

Carrying the drinks - Harry Trott - decent all rounder from the olden days but not quite dominant enough to get a place in the final XI

Doug Walters - 5357 @ 48.26 | 49 wkts @ 29.08
Frank Woolley - 3283 @ 36.07 | 83 wkts @ 33.91

Hedley Verity - 144 wkts @ 24.37
Sydney Barnes - 189 @ 16.43

Dick Barlow - 591 @ 22.73 | 34 @ 22.55

Pros:
- Amazing bowling lineup with great backup as well. No need to introduce those 4 really.
- Quite a few dashers in the batting lineup who can go after the bowlers.
- Arguably the best wicketkeeper batsman of all time.
- 12th man is an allrounder so can slot in wherever.

Cons:
- Fairly boring to watch openers.
- Probably lacking a batsman, the likes of Hammond, Chappell or Ponting, to give the batting a boost.
- Barnes will pick a fight with everyone.

Jack Ryder 1400 runs @ 51.62
Dean Jones 3631 runs @ 46.88
Mark Waugh 8000 runs @ 41.81

12th Man: (for now) Max Walker (RFM) 586 runs @ 19.53 & 138 wickets @ 27.47

Relatively happy with my side in the end....

Strengths:
Incredible batting depth with Botham coming in at 8
Four express bowlers in Lockwood, Miller, Ulyett & Gillespie & 6 Bowlers in all
Two best English/Australian All-rounders of all time

Weaknesses:
Doesn't have a bowling attack like Himannv's
Doesn't have the top order batting strength of Blakus
