Another scoundrel allowed relief in the sub continent

AWTA.

However, Malik being a Pakistani couldnt buy property in India anyway to start an academy. If at all he really wanted to, he'd do in the name of a binami, given his contact. don't think a ban would make things easier or difficult there, except of course in branding it.
You completely misunderstood. I never said he wanted to start an academy in India. I just gave examples of both India and Pakistan to show how big a business it is in both countries and what it involves to start an academy in both.

Of course, he wants to start an academy in Pakistan. Probably in Karachi in Sindh from where both Malik and the present dispensation ruling Pakistan comes.

I saw why you misunderstood that. have made the correction in the original post :)

With this cricket academy he wont have to. Of course, he could include a 'specialisation' on the subject as a kind of 'post graduation' degree for those who pass out from his academy.

An idea Sir ji :)

Anyway now that he's had his punishment, he should be given a chance to prove the contrary. If he starts a cricket academy, and though that enable the development of Pakistani cricket, it's a move to be appreciated.

The guy was the biggest 'king pin' from inside the game. This is well recorded and I am not going to go about quoting the innumerable cases/instances just to debate those who either do not have a clue as to what they are talking about and will not take the trouble of acquiring the information widely available in the form of published/recorded stuff (besides what you can get on the net) OR are just going to say something to the contrary ro make their presence. Sorry I dont bite that bait.

Coming to what has happened. Malik was banned for life, much like India did to Azhar. Now when the guy wants to open a cricket academy he may be finding his being banned from having any association with Pakistani cricket coming in the way of his commercial ambitions. I do not know far a fact but can make an educated guess.

One of the biggest problems in starting a cricket academy in the major cities in India (or Pakistan) is the availability of space. If you want to buy it, it will cost the moon. So you either get a bank or a financial institution to loan me the amount at modest terms or you get some Govt body/institution to let you have access to land virtually free as has been done in India too in the past. Another possibility is for one of the schools or colleges with a cricket ground to allow you to tun your academy there (doubt if he is doing that though) and again the ban makes it difficult for an educational institute to give him access.

So what does Mr Salim Malik, or any other person in the sub-continent with influential contacts, do. Just meet the right people and get the ban reduced. How long will the furore over it, if any, last. People will forget and the cricket academy, they is big business in the sub continent, will be bringing home the bacon.

The match fixing was about money above principals and so is this.Thats all there is to it or to anything else connected to cricket in India and Pakistan.
He Served his time. Tell me a country or any other profession where one serves lifetime ban from earning any kind of livelihood because of accepting/offering bribe. Its not like he killed people. He is not a murderer or something.

It is ridiculous to suggest that any cricket Academy will bring money. Salim is the most tainted cricketer ever and I really doubt that he will have much success with the academy and even if he did, and he produced one good cricketer for his country, it will be well worth.

Everyone wants to start a cricket academy. I know of at least twenty Indian Test and first class cricketers who do and another twenty who are already running their academies. I have been to them and seen what's happening at most of them and how much trouble the 'cricketer behind the show' and whose name is what first attracts the boys, is actually taking beyond the commercial aspects. In most cases negligible.

"For the good of the game", "for the good of the people", "for the good of the nation" are slogans so easily sold in our part of the world by cricketers and politicians alike - its all about "the good of the individual concerned"

Steve Waugh and Macquarie Bank have established an investment fund to develop communities in India whose centrepiece are branded cricket academies

They operate in a similar way to Golf Course Estates - the residents (who have paid a premium for living in a community with facilities of this type) have some of their fees diverted to the academy to ensure that it is, on the surface, a viable business while Waugh gets a massive fee for having his name attached to it and making the odd appearance

The police force. The judiciary. Politics. The legal profession. Of course, this assumes they're caught. :)

But I think you're point is right.

Don't exactly have a soft spot for him but I do feel the same as Sanz that the man served his time. I've also always felt that he was made a scapegoat by the courts amid all the match fixing allegations.

Yup I think Wasim was an equally guilty party, remeber reading a statement by Justice Qayyum that he let off Akram since he wa his personal favourite cricketer.

IMO the biggest victim of this whole thing was 'Ata'. A good upcoming player caught in the mess because of his seniors. Every time I read his story, I feel very sorry for him.

Saucy headline.

Methinks Malik could sue this website to oblivion though for defamation of character. He has the law on his side now.

No soft spot, but just feel that he is not a criminal. I think he has been punished enough for what he did.
Used to actually like watching him bat, though didn't see that happen often (mainly ODI games).

I stand corrected
.It seems the court has "lifted the ban" which is nit the same thing as reducing his ban. It hasn't been stated anywhere that I have seen that the court has said "he wasn't guilty" of the charges originally framed against him.

Its strange to read that PCB is now saying that
"PCB did not impose the ban, we just implemented the recommendations of inquiry tribunal," and
"We will honour the decision of session court and will not file an appeal against the ruling."

Interesting.
