Another "bid for position" draft?

Rhodes wasn't that great at just coming in and hitting it from the get go. I think Lloyd is a better fit for no 6; he was great coming in down the order and smashing it. Rhodes did his best work at 5. Excellent fielder but he wasn't the best batsman available for the role you needed IMO.

I had a few name in my mind but I preferred someone I like as IMHO, average of 32, 35, 38 does not mean that much in ODIs when we are picking our No.6. But yes, maybe I will play Lloyd at No.6 depending on the situation.

How did you manage to pick so many gun players @kingkallis ? What were rest of us doing? ?
I think it probably helped that I'd decided from the outset that my approach was to try and essentially recreate England's WC winning team but with better bowling and a result some of the people I picked e.g. BMac, Roy, Morgan would probably have gone a lot lower otherwise

10. Andry Roberts
11. Dennis Lillee

Who needs pedigree when you have power hitting down to 8 in the order. Aim will be to score 350 every game and then use a mixture of express pace and wily spin to try and eek out a win

Lots of fast bowling, lots of batting, part time spin of Dilshan and Anwar. Pretty happy with the side, although I should confess I picked Gary Gilmour without realizing I already had Mitch Starc. If I can change one player now, I would love to do that.
I like that Narine pick was between him and Jadeja for me, Narine with more variation but Jadeja with more batting and fielding

I like LL's recent picks Ajantha Mendis and Dravid as wicketkeeper - both very underrated ODI cricketers especially in CW

Mushfiqur Rahim to finish off my side.

1) ST Jayasuriya / o
2) RG Sharma /
3) JH Kallis / o
4) DM Jones /
5) MG Bevan / o
6) Mushfiqur Rahim / +
7) Kapil Dev o /
8) IT Botham o /
9) CL Cairns o /
10) SK Warne o
11) TA Boult o

Definitely an interesting side, with 9 batters and 8 bowlers. There is variety, and the ability to have the game progress at a fast rate through the middle overs. Note that the batting order isn't set in stone; in some cases Bevan won't bat at all due to a strong start.

Cricketer Of The Year
My line-up:

Virender Sehwag /o
Aaron Finch /
Javed Miandad /
Viv Richards (C) /o
Rahul Dravid (wk) /
Mohammad Nabi /o
Shaun Pollock /o
Chris Woakes /o
Richard Hadlee /o
Josh Hazelwood /o
Ajantha Mendis /o

A pair of free-flowing openers with good strike rates. Miandad tended to score more freely when up the order while "The Master Blaster" is an ATG in any form of the game. Dravid is an under-rated keeper batsman and the team bats down to number 9. The pace attack of Pollock, Hadlee, Hazelwood and Woakes is both reliable and penetrating. Mendis is a mystery spinner with a great strike rate while Nabi provides spin back-up. Richards and Sehwag provide additional bowling support if needed.

Happy to have 2 openers who have been able to maintain good averages despite very impressive strike rates (keeping their respective eras in mind) - hoping these two can consistently get us off to good starts. Babar Azam a great number 3 to have with consistently high returns at a decent strike rate. Martin Crowe a reliable cog with a decent record - wanted someone who had plenty of experience playing at 4 and he fits the bill playing over a third of his innings there.

In World Cup games it is noteworthy that openers Bairstow and Hayden's averages go up to 48 and 52 respectively whilst Crowe averages 55, and Azam 67 in World Cup games.

Arjuna Ranatunga adds a helpful 6th bowling option and a decent batsman himself (Crowe as an emergency 7th option) but I'm pretty happy with my 5 genuine bowling options.

Jos Buttler a great finisher to have, obviously his SR is helped by scores increasing in ODI cricket but it says a lot that only 8 players average more then 35 whilst keeping a strike rate of above 110, the 7 others have played a combined 34 ODI matches, the other guy is Buttler.

Imran Khan and Ravi Jadeja gives us good batting depth that allows a bit more freedom for the openers and Buttler. Imran Khan a great leader to have as captain as well and ensures there are no fill-in overs if all our 5 main bowlers bowl their full quote, Ravi Jadeja with an amazing economy rate given the era he is playing in and the fact India often see a lot of high scoring games, his fielding is a bonus too.

Jadeja's spin supplemented by Mushtaq who offers some mystery with the doosra despite being a finger spinner whilst Garner an ATG especially at ODI level. Gillespie a compromise pick but happy enough to have him and still a solid option.

Was quite pleased with my XI at the end. Not that many top tier cricketers but still no passengers either. Opening pair comprises 2nd best ODI opener ever (IMO) and one of the top ODI all-rounders ever -- both capable of great strokeplay. Middle order has lot of solidity with players from #3 to #6 all accomplished accumulators with an extra gear when required. Yuvraj at #7 is almost a luxury, expect lot of late order hitting as well as clutch chases. Bowling comprises clever and skillful trio of pace bowlers and greatest ever spin bowler irrespective of format (IMO). Watson is the 5th bowler. Should any of the main bowlers break down or have a bad day, there is plenty of back up - Chappell, Yuvraj and de Silva can all roll their arms.

----

For this draft I pretty much used the same bidding strategy that served me quite well in the test version where I could draft a dream team. Although in hindsight I should have played ODI version differently given the distribution of players across tiers is quite different. Nevertheless, the strategy still meant that I finished my team before all others and picked all solid players.
