Superleague XI Thread

Here it is folks. What you've all been waiting for.

First, as I'm bored, time for a little history lesson. In 1996, the European Super League was introduced by Rupert Murdoch and Sky television. The first winners of the Super League were St Helens. After 1997, Paris St. Germain folded and the name was changed from "European Super League" to "Super League (Europe)". In 1998, the showpiece occassion was introduced - the playoffs and Super League Grand Final. For the first two seasons, the top two had played off in the old Premiership final, although even if they lost, the team that finished top were still the league champions.

CW Crusaders will be the 20th team to play in the competition, after Bradford Bulls, Castleford Tigers, Halifax Blue Sox, Leeds Rhinos, London Broncos, Oldham Bears, Paris St. Germain, St Helens, Sheffield Eagles, Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, Workington, Salford City Reds, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Gateshead Thunder, Wakefield Wildcats, Widnes Vikings and Leigh Centurions.

League Winners:
Super League I: St Helens*
II: Bradford Bulls*
III:Wigan Warriors
IV: St Helens
V: St Helens
VI:Bradford Bulls
VII: St Helens
VIII: Bradford Bulls
IX: Leeds Rhinos
X: Bradford Bulls
XI: CW Crusaders??

No it isn't. The 13th season of Superleague is after this one, then after the 12th.

How embarassing.

I thought we took the Paris teams spot, so we where going to play in Paris. I must have been missed informed somewhere. BTW are the teams we are playing the squads for last season or do they include players signed for next season.

They're last seasons squads.

And Les Catalans aren't from Paris anyway. Try Perpignan :p

Is that how the playoffs work?

I allways thought it was:

6th vs 5th
Winner vs 4th
Winner vs 3rd
Winner vs 2nd
Winner vs 1st

Nope. I don't think that system would work, anyway. For a 5th/6th placed team to win, they'd have to play 5 straight games against opposition who become more fresh than them every game, and the 1st placed team would go 4 whole weeks without a competitive game, thus in all likelihood being not as match fit as the team they play in the final.

Two days till the first game against Huddersfield. Looking for a good couple of days on the track, and those who are in form can maintain it throughout the first half of the season.

Quick Season Preview

Predicted Table
  1. Bradford Bulls
  2. St Helens
  3. Leeds Rhinos
  4. Hull FC
  5. Warrington Wolves
  6. Huddersfield Giants
    ----------------------------
  7. Wigan Warriors
  8. London Broncos
  9. Wakefield Wildcats
  10. Salford City Reds
  11. CW Crusaders
    ----------------------------
  12. Widnes Vikings

Very little seperates Bradford, Leeds and St Helens at the top. Both Bradford and St Helens had injury problems last season, the difference being Bradford's came at the start of the season, and after that cloud lifted and the Bulls finally acquired a hooker (Ian Henderson) they got moving in the right direction and were unstoppable at the season's climax, whilst Saints, after their most consistent campaign in several seasons, were hit by injuries going into the playoffs. Leeds are marginally the weakest of the three if all three.

Hull are in no mans land, at the moment. Easily the fourth best team in the competition, yet not quite the level of Saints/Leeds/Bradford, yet. Could easily, and should, put up a strong challenge with Cooke and Horne pulling the strings on the field and master tactician John Kear in charge.

The next grouping of teams will challenge for the remaining two playoff places. Again, not alot seperates Warrington, Huddersfield and Wigan. Warrington are probably the better side of the three. Huddersfield are a hardworking, improving team, with underrated props Eorl Crabtree and Wayne McDonald providing a solid platform for Chris Thorman's and Stanley Gene's creativity. Unforetunately the rest of the team looks a little bit too weak to seriously sustain a challenge for the title. Wigan's resources and depth were exposed last season when Kris Radlinski, Brian Carney and Sean O'Loughlin were sidelined for much of the season and Ian Millward was forced into throwing youngsters in left, right and centreand claiming it was "building for the future." Though still a strong side on paper, if any two of Radlinski, Carney, O'Loughlin, Danny Tickle or Danny Orr, who's starting to find his Castelford form, get crocked for a considerable amount of time, they can kiss goodbye to a top 5 finish and possibly a top 6 one, too. The pressure is really on scrum half Dennis Moran to start delivering in a cherry and white shirt.

The next cluster are the teams that most likely will only have an outside chance of making the 6, but will comfortably avoid the wooden spoon - and relegation. London and Wakefield rely far too much on a couple of players from overseas, Bradley-Qalilawa and Leuluia for London and Solomona in Wakefield's shirt.

The Crusaders and Widnes will most likely scrap to avoid relegation. The Crusaders' lack of experience at this level and, more importantly, lack of forwards will count against them, however their unknown quantity and solid performances pre-season lead us to believe they might have an edge on Widnes. The Crusaders backs, Pickup and Cameron in particular with ball in hand along with Gray's boot, look strong. If the forwards can all stay fit and provide the right platform for the backs, the Crusaders may well outperform our prediction, and even if they don't, they can still take solace in that Sean Bennett's long, flowing locks and Dale Brumby will challenge Eorl Crabtree's ponytail and Sean Long for "Super League's worst hair."
