Question on ban announcements

The problem with the play the post not the poster mantra is that it's not easy to reconcile with the "forum atmosphere" infraction.
This is not an infraction though. It doesn't exist. Forum atmosphere bans are things we sometimes have to do outside the infraction system in extreme cases of direness. They're used very, very sparingly for this reason.

There's no precedent at all for us using them on someone due to merely the views expressed in their posts either as would have to be the case here. It's only been used on people who have been unbearably antagonistic or disobedient, of which watson fits neither. There are ways of dealing with what you might call 'unacceptable views' to the community/owner, but only through the infraction system on a post-by-post basis. I unashamedly think this is a very good thing.

Haha, I've got dodgy internet for the next couple of days so it might keep happening. I probably won't post much in that time, and if I do I'll try to clean up my duplicates, but apologies if I miss some. :p

Ok, if it's not an infraction then fair enough.

But I disagree with the second para here. I agree with what you have said in principle, but I don't think it aligns with Watson's posting. It's not that his views are unacceptable, but that the way he presents them is antagonistic, and so bankrupt of logic and reason that they are basically just trolls.

Yeah there was a recentish exchange with np10 where his posting was just so bad.

If I was giving him the benefit of the doubt I'd say he appears to lack empathy. But I think there's a definite maliciousness to his banality.

I am not sure if having extreme views should be permissable or not. If some one believes holocaust didn't occur and expresses that, it's still at the end of the day, he is own belief, no matter how wrong. It's a can of worms this topic - how much freedom of expression is acceptable.

At the end of the day, it's up to James & co isn't it. I have and will disagreed with many of the decisions made on this forum but it should never be equated with freedom of speech, it's a forum you sign up for voluntarily and you do so accepting their terms.

One of the worst things watson does is that even when he makes a non-racist post it gets people going like flies around **** because every word he says is potentially dripping with connotation. So when he is bad, you know it's going to be really bad.

The guys is an avid nationalist but also a socialist. Not a good combination for mainstream political discussion, one feels.

I really like how the forum is run right now btw. It's done quite efficiently and smoothly. Kudos to every one.

Forgetting Watson for moment, was Firebreaker a previous poster with a new name? He just seemed to turn up, post crap and be banned within a couple of weeks. Quite an achievement for a totally new poster.
I'm not aware of multi infractions, I think he just posted enough rubbish to rack up a bunch of infractions very quickly.

It was mostly because he admitted to being an experienced poster on other cricket forums. So there was no leniency given to his posting as would be usual for a newbie.

Spark infracted me pretty quickly when I first started posting (many years after joining!).... it was because I did not know how the filter worked.:shy:

Whilst it make have taken until now for Watson to make an overtly racist post, there are a litany of other examples of his general direness that have been dragging the forum atmosphere down for months at least.
Indeed, it's been clear how his posts edged, and the playing dumb about Milo, was just abject trolling, and forum atmos, I have no idea what notifications he's picked up but I do believe 90% of his posts in Politic threads should have been giving minor infractions for pure trolling, which would hopefully have stopped his behaviour before he said something too horrible.

Anyway he wasn't the only one ruining politics thread, Libertarianism like on so many political threads on the internet has far too high a profile for a minority (and some would say crackpot) view.

I thought that was why that PEWS thread was invented.
