I think steds had a valid point. But being the juvenile delinquent he is, he messed up in the presentation.

Considering that, I've never really understood the need for use of swearing. English is a beautiful language. You can convey your message, with the same power, without swearing but using other words.

Applause is a mass noun (like water, knowledge, cattle) so you can't use 'a' or 'an' with them because you can't have only one of them.
