How do you adjust the picture that you want to use so that you can use it has an avatar

try saving it as a different file type, or scaling it down to 100x100 pixels

Fairly basic use of MS Paint usually does the trick.

There's a logic to that actually - as an avatar, it doesn't show up on search engines (I think) - a pic in a post might.
