Battle of the Rugby World Cup players

Jeez. Spoiling us for choice in that second one, Brumby. An american football pundit vs. a French-Wigan money-chaser.

It has to be Lynagh for the '91 World Cup semi-final against Ireland when he took the captain's armband and orchestrated the last gasp try. One of the great rugby World Cup moments. Francois Pienaar is famous for shaking hands with Mandela. OK, he was a good captain, but James Small's crazy defence won that Cup. Plus Pienaar almost ruined the damn game by signing contracts with Murdoch or Packer or whoever it was.

Oh, and Martin Johnson.

Ok, Michael Lynagh edges out Pienaar by the odd point in nine & Johnno whitewashes poor old Jase Robinson.

Next up, for your pleasure:

Battle 13

Joel Stransky (South Africa)

vs

Tim Horan (Australia)

Battle 14

Michael Jones (New Zealand)

vs

John Kirwan (New Zealand)

The man whose drop goal broke a few million kiwi hearts faces Australia's double world champion prince of the centre & there's an absolute titanic clash between two bona fide AB legends in Battle 14.

Horan was key to two World Cup victories and the player of the tournament in 1999. One of the great all-time performances in a World Cup against SA in the semis, despite suffering from severe food poisoning the night before the match.
