I can't believe I ate the whole thing
NZ is still probably very good. But post-Rossco blues
On paper we are very good. We have 3 established, world class seamers in Southee, Boult and Wagner, plus a recentish addition who has gunned it but partially having second album blues (Jamieson). Henry is a well experienced first class player and is coming off an excellent home summer. We have the best opener for NZ since Richardson, but who hasn't got great overseas credentials. One of the best batsmen in the world, and arguably our best batsman ever. Another solid, experienced FC bat in Young, and arguably our second best batsman in Devon Conway who blitzed England on debut last year. All these components, when compared to England, should see us as favourites, but there's still some air of uncertainty due to our home summer, some worrying signs from Jamieson, the patchy form of Blundell, and the reluctance to play Patel anywhere that isn't a dustbowl. Combined with the iffy form of an experienced CdG, there's still a few question marks that remain. I like Mitchell as a player and he's exceeded my expectations tbh so I'm hoping that he can really establish himself as a specialist bat by right because he's still in my mind a bit and pieces player who has kept his spot with decent contributions, even though that's not really the case. it's unfair, but he doesn't feel like a "whole" player in the side to me as yet, but this may be the series that he crosses to the other side.

NZs (short term) problems for the last 6 months/ extending to this series.

  • Missing Kane at 3, upsetting the entire batting solidity.
  • Wagner and Jamieson being shadow of their former selves. Meaning no penetration after new ball bowlers rest. Making the 4 seamer balance pointless.
  • No spinner, see above re: old ball bowling.
  • Very soft tail.
Can't really fix the batting side. I'd leave Wagner out to fix the old ball bowling problem (replaced with a CdG/Patel combo).

Think England will win this one. Has a similar sort of vibe to the last time when we toured England while English cricket was in the midst of a crisis (following the 2015 WC). McCullum strikes me as the right sort of bloke to get the best out of the likes of Bairstow (especially as Bairstow's had a similar sort of run to the first 3/4's of McCullum's career, getting constantly shuffled up and down the order and in and out of different roles in the side) and the younger players.

Don't know about the series as a whole though, feel NZ could bounce back to get a 2-1 series win if Williamson and Boult can get established.

The small positive is we got a lot of derping done in the practice games, and not in the first test.

There may be one to three tests of derping to come but it's better to start early and finish strong (or not).

Also I'm going to offer the alternative opinion that KJ bowling 140-145kph like he did against the Dutch isn't worth losing God mode KJ bowling 130-135kph.

It would be nice if we get God mode KJ at 140-145kph but at the end of this season, if he sucks for 12 months straight (since Bangers tour), then it's time to settle into being what he's good at - a rare tall outswing bowler who gets terrifying bounce off an unusually full length.

Despite all the negativity from fellow Kiwis (except for nzfan who is super positive), I reckon we will go pretty well. England have only three players who average over 30 (the nos 4-6), while despite missing Nicholls we will have all of our top 7 who've achieved that and a much stronger tail.

Lost pace and advancing years are valid concerns, but I'm not sure Wagner deserves this casual comment about producing the output of a shadow. If he were Ross Taylor, they'd totally wait until his stats were looking just as wretched as he was to the eye.

Differenve is that bar that Aus tour in 2019 NZ where a top tier team while carrying Rosco. They don't look like that ATM.

They won't for a while in this format, either. No South African starch has been filtering into the local wet mix since early 2020. Heinrich Malan then escaped to Ireland, more starch was lost.

This liberal bien pensant nostrum I'm hearing is to now tip out Wagner's old stockpiles of starch, because there are neurotic Wellingtonians concerned about it being awfully close to its best before date. As if they'd know about getting sufficient starch into a wet mix. They've got the dribbliest wet mix of all.

Rather than dancing around the issue, why not be precise and specific? Call out these specific "neurotic Wellingtonians" so at least they know they should have a right to reply.

I read the article and the Henry in that quote refers to Henry Nicholls, not Matt Henry. It is only Cricinfo staff who are picking MH won't play (probably because TS, KJ, and NW are all ranked in the top 10 bowlers in the world). Stead didn't say anything about pace bowlers except saying Boult was arriving later in the day.
Haha, my bad I interpreted that as Matt Henry. Pleased to be wrong on that one. Henry must play.

Agree, but even outside of that I can't help feeling that England will be 20% better than they were in last years series & NZ 20% worse than the side that beat England and of course won the WTC after that. That was our peak.

Hope I'm wrong but I definitely see England as favourites.

The UK is going through its biggest cost of living crisis since the 1970s. People cannot afford to pay their energy bills and these muppets are charging £150 a pop for tickets.

I am one such dude who would normally be attending but just cannot afford it this year.

I appreciate I am telling this to someone who is from these islands (I think!)
ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY QUID?

**** me. I went to the 2004 England v NZ Test, was 30 quid. The 2005 Ashes Tests were 50.

That's ****ing insane. Ridiculous. Pathetic.

It’s an interesting time for both attacks. If this summer doesn’t go well for Broaderson it will probably mean no more test cricket for at least one of them, so they’d be extra motivated you’d think.

Since the WTC final, only Henry among the NZ pacemen has really made strides in the positive direction, Southee has remained class. The rest haven’t shown a lot of teeth. Need an in-form Boult back ASAP.
