Think this is my England team, if I was picking it tomorrow

Compton
Burns
Bohannon
Root
Brook
Stokes
Bairstow
Robinson
Leach
Anderson
Broad

Would be harsh on Foakes as the incumbent and averaging 100 so far this season. Though with Stokes moving back to 6 it does feel like Bairstow will get the gloves back at some stage. (Decision may be deferred anyway if Jonny misses the first Test due to IPL...)

why would you persist with rory burns? he not only sucks, but is a tool, and not in the fun and forgivable way

i know the cupboard’s bare but still don’t disgrace yourself like that

Reckon we've got to give Lees at least the NZ series. Not sure I rate him, but he is the incumbent and averaging 98 for the season with a couple of tons.

Foakes wasn't good in the Windies with bat or gloves IMHO.

He sticks around a bit and Lees looked rubbish to me, but TBH I wouldn't be bothered if he didn't play really, the batting is just horrible, but my side has three debutants might be an idea to play someone with a bit more experience, yet as I say it's all much-of-a-muchness.

I can't see them picking Bohannon. They're definitely going to pick Brook because he's Officer Material and in good form, and can't really blame them for that given his results this year.

Also think Compton is nowhere near the conversation right now. People forget his average is boosted by playing in Zim. All the media attention he got for a good start this year was unjustified in my opinion. They will play Crawley and Lees for the NZ series.

Is england coach a full time role. Surely at least 6 months are just spent watching the odd county game?
Fleming has only ever taken IPL/T20 gigs. England's schedule is very much more demanding than that.

You could be right, but someones got to bat 3, mind you we may as well put Leach in there for all the good it seems to do us.

BTW, you'd think as a painful old Socialist, you'd think I'd be fully behind this "upper-class" bias thing, but oddly I'm not.

Cricket isn't played in most comps nowadays, there are patches of places that they may play a bit in, but really most Enland cricketers come from abroad, poshos, and family connections. Some all three like Compton. I'm not hugely surprised that we have so few Working-class Englishmen playing.

I am being harsh to Harry Brook, as I often am, as he attended a comprehensive until he got a scholarship: I meant more that he has been talked about as an England player for a long time, like Crawley was. Don't think anyone thought Bohannon would play for England until he started putting up the numbers.

It would be a welcome change if for once we picked players like Brook and Potts while they are actually in good form, rather than dithering for years until they're out of form.

Only seen Potts on the highlights from yesterday but looks to have a nice action. Couldn't get a sense of pace but looked sharp. I'm all for younger bowlers getting chance too. I think Brook probably will be picked as well due to form. Maybe at three though depending on what happens with the gloves.

Compton is averaging 95 opening the batting in div one county this year, his average isn't just inflated by county.

He's not played that much FC at all. Would be a hell of a risk. I'd get Duckett back in the top three, if not opening.

And the other options are much better? Either we pick him or take Crawley, who's averaging 20 this county season on the same pitches compton is averaging 95 on, burns who can't buy a significant score for surrey without reverting back to the technique that's been exposed at test level, or Sibley who attmidedly has been great this season and looks to have made good changes in the off season.

I would have no issue with Sibley and Lee's opening vs NZ, but we shouldn't just write off Compton.

Mahmood now out for the remainder of the season. Robinson still struggling for fitness. Potts might be in with a shout for a call up.

As for the openers, must admit I'd always felt Crawley should be a specialist #3 but he's having a stinker of a season so far. Sibley has looked good but has he done enough? After all the talk of Bohannon his form has fallen away of late. I'd have no objection to Sibley slotting back into the team.

At #5 the talk has been Brook but Pope is also looking good this year once again.

I think there are a number of potentials to fill the batting line up, on pure runs scored alone this season, I think the final selection will be based on whether BMac and Stokes think they have the right character to be an International player over a prolonged period of time.
