Exceptions support the rule. SL still had a gun bowling attack.
They really didn’t though. If you were worried about SL doing a number on your side in any format in the 2000s you were plainly mediocre. Fmd Chaminda Vaas tearing in with the new rock and dishing up under 17s rep standard stuff. Tres intimidating. Kulwhosakera? Come on. However will we score off them?

Migara did his broken clock thing and made a reasonable point re Jayasuriya before. ODI gun in that era. The rest not really a threat at all tbh.

Migara

Cricketer Of The Year
Donald, Pollock, Mathews. De Villiers, Klusener - That is one heck of a bowling attack for SAF. They couldn't win it even with that fire power. Not forgetting they had McMillian too who could bowl.

Fmd that 90s list with big Merv Dillon. Genuine blast from the past that.

Whatever it takes!!!
More annoyed he didn’t score enough runs in the last series than the test championship tbh
Weren't they the same? Or did you mean the Shield?

Yeah, thought they really turned a corner with Reon King, Franklyn Rose and Merv Dillon showing up in 1998. Then the first two went to pieces. :( Such a talented trio too. Still think big Merv would have been a ****ing good 3rd seamer after those two.

Yeah I think looking back on it their bowling got them way up the rankings over the batting. I think the batting was pretty ordinary for a lot of the 90s, when you look back at it. Kirsten was really good late in the decade but Gibbs got better later on as did Kallis. Cronje was pretty average really and Rhodes was loveable but cod ordinary overall.

Nah Kulasekara got to number 1 in the ODI rankings - very similar bowler to Kyle Mills. Malinga and Vaas were ODI greats and Mendis was amazing when he started.

yeah that was probablywhen it looked like they might put something decent together but they just went backwards.

lol just checked that list again. Peter Taylor getting a run! Love it!

Re Smith, I was more referring to not caring about the test championship, and more about the test series’ as they’re played.

80s would be between Garner and Kapil (assuming you don't want to repeat Viv). I would go Kapil simply because he wasn't that far behind Garner in bowling (please don't attack me, stats squad) and his batting SR for the time is ridiculous. Complete ODI bowling AR.

90s Sachin obvsly.

00s is a tough one. Could give it to a bunch of players really.

Noughties also had the most rule changes of all ODI eras. It started with the 90s rules of 2 catchers in 15 yards and 15 over restrictions with all balls above shoulder being no balls and it cycled through so many changes... I really think ODIs have been a different game since 2015, and the decades perhaps line up better if we consider them pre 1975, 75-85, 85-95,95-05,05-15,15-present.

Seems a bit funny to have Kapil ahead of Garner for the 80s and Murali ahead of Pollock for the 2000s. Max of one of these should be true.
