2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

The interesting thing about Otago is that they have no international regulars but a bunch of solid domestic players - they might have the best side when international regulars are excluded.
not even close.

i wouldn't even say they have a bunch of solid domestic players. apart from rutherford there is no one trustworthy in that top six and the bowling isn't anything special either, and i have more time for duffy, rae and smith than most.

I found this interesting stat on cricket archive.
Look who is number 2.

Conway certainly couldn't have done anything more. ND really nailed their overseas player recruitment in the late 80's/early 90's, Hick then Maynard. I wonder how Myburgh would have gone if he had stayed in NZ.

Simply astonishing he didn’t get selected in the test squad, if not side. This article sums it up well: https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion...-by-leaving-devon-conway-out-of-the-test-side
The writer says it's cricketing criminal that he won't be utilised for two Tests. The only person you can drop is Blundell. OK, I get the argument for Conway over Young in the squad, but there are arguments the other way as well.

I find it weird this line though:
Should Blundell fare reasonably well against the Windies in Hamilton and in the capital – as he’s eminently capable of doing so – then the selectors will have backed themselves into a corner already and be obligated to pick him for the two tests against Pakistan.

That would double down on the original blunder.

Huh? Not sure that runs against Gabriel, Roach, Holder and Chase should be sneezed at.

Ross Taylor is in his last summer as a Test player, I would wager. The best of Conway or Young in the next 12 months will get that spot.

Pftt....the best of Conway or Young.

If he'd been called Devon Mazakadza, I think NZC would've probably changed the name of NZA to the Devon Mazakadza XI last summer to make sure he was front and centre. Then they would've made an irritatingly overt display of what they'd done, hoping for just the briefest of mentions in The Guardian.

Conway seems to be the better player...but I've not seen Conway pump back to back hundreds against an all-international attack. The NZ selectors have seen Young do that, and they've seen him in the environment. They've invested in him. I get why they've picked him over Conway.

Doesn't it feel inevitable that Conway will end up getting the second opening spot and Young takes #4 beyond 2020-21?

International sports is a strange beast. Either you get unbelievable adulation or abject criticism. The number of guys that put you on a pedestal also drag you down. Both Young and Conway are older which can impact them either way. Either they can bank on their experience and have no regrets or could go in with a mindset if I stuff it up now, chances are I may have burnt my chances. We never know what goes on between ears. We do know it will impact them. I will wait and watch both players. Conway on record is a better player, Young has been through lot of hurdles to get to this stage.

Both their fortunes are directly related to the fortunes of the team. If Black Caps go on to win both the test series as we expect them to, the wait could be longer. If it doesn't go as per plan, chances are both may be included in the near future.

What is the ODI scenario like this season? I feel both of them will need to at least be involved with the ODI setup while they bide their time over a test callup. The current ODI top 5 of Guptill, Nicholls, KE, Taylor, Latham is pretty set too but you can afford to tinker with that.

Given the fact that NZA keep asking Will Young to open, even now when Conway is playing, I feel like we may end up with the opposite of that.

yea i think nz are gonna try be cute with young. a middle order player who throws tons away probably needs to bat lower rather than higher because he's gonna have to work for his 50s opening in nz.

We only have three ODIs, vs Bangladesh, so not much chance to try out new combos with that schedule.

i was just thinking today im pretty confident in my test second xi but not my odi one. it's a bit more up for grabs and there's dudes with silly domestic records who you wouldn't expect like boyle and newton.

Black Caps should start thinking about the world cup in India. No point carrying on picking players that are most likely not going to make the squad in three years time. Start giving some of these players opportunities from now rather than wait another couple of years and then find out we are lacking in many areas. I like the fact the test team is set and it should be but definitely should be trying out players in T20s and ODIs.
