Swimming Thread

Look, if sports like basketball get a thread, swimming has to get one. At least you don't have to be 6 foot five to get a gig.

Anyway, US to lead overall swimming tally, Australia hopefully second.

Predicted Stars:

Men: Phelps (duh!), Hackett
Women: Trickett, Amanda Beard

Predicted dramas:

Hackett (we'll find out at the end he had a broken toe or something and summonsed up the spirit of Boy Charlton to win)

Phelps: Crocker to beat him in the 100m butterfly, depriving him of a 4 x 100 medley relay swim (won't likely happen but you've got to have a lash).

Leisel Jones: wins 1 gold, 1 silver. Sulks around like her dog just died.

Thoughts?

Both the men's short freestyle events should be excellent. Nystrand and Bernard against the Aussie-USA dominance.

100m breaststroke should be ok too. You'll forgive me for having some doubts over Hackett. When did he last swim in a championship?

Alexander Dale Oen: 59.41 on the 100m breaststroke

Possibly the first Norwegian record to be lower than the Australian record He's certainly the first Norwegian to set an Olympic record in swimming.

Phelps isn't exactly easing his way into it, is he? Kicks off with a ****ing world record.

Considering he owns half the world records himself, hardly surprising.

Not sure whether he's good enough to take the 400 free though. Was about 3.45 pace today.

I don't think this will be the case this time, she's been impressive in the pool and in the media since then.

Good to see Alice Mills get a medal in the 4 x 100 again.
